Job summary

We are excited to be adding to our team and are currently seeking to recruiting a Consultant Ophthalmologist General /Cataract surgery to support with our cataract and general Ophthalmology. Hours and timescales are negotiable. This is a new and exciting post to support with our increase cataract suite capacity.

Main duties of the job

This role is that of a General Ophthalmologist, with a special interest in cataract surgery. This is to allow expansion of a dynamic team of 6 existing consultant colleagues and to support a growing workload.

The post would also suit candidates with sub-specialty experience in an area complementing the existing department. This post is aimed at individuals who are also able to undertake a wide range of general ophthalmic duties, and who are able to fit into a team delivering a broad range of both general and sub-specialist ophthalmic care. A high level of competence in cataract surgery is essential.

Job responsibilities

The Victoria Eye Unit was formed in August 2002 following a move to the new County Hospital from the dedicated Victoria Eye Hospital in Hereford City. The Victoria Eye Unit is the Ophthalmology Department at the Wye Valley NHS Trust and is based in the Eign Suite outpatients department. The Ophthalmology Department has the largest catchment area of any department within the Trust and this is currently approximately 230,000. The surgical throughput is approximately 2000 patients per annum. The eye unit prides itself in having a happy and highly cohesive team of doctors, nurses, orthoptists and technicians, all of who are dedicated to providing the highest level of care to our patients.

The Ophthalmology secretariat is based in the Educational and Development Centre 2nd floor. The successful candidate will have secretarial support and a dedicated office space with appropriate IT facilities.

The Consultant is in overall charge of patients and will allocate duties and responsibilities depending on the experience of his or her team.

The appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist will work in both general and specialist clinics and see new and return patients.

The appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist will be expected to have a special interest that complements the existing interests of the department and will integrate into the present structure.

Surgical work will depend on the experience and interest of the candidate. A high level of competence in cataract surgery is expected.
