Job summary

This is a substantive post which consolidates the Hereford Obstetrics and Gynaecology Services. The successful candidate will join our friendly & enthusiastic team providing first class care to women & families. The candidate will work alongside nine other Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologists based at Hereford County Hospital in the City of Hereford.

Nearly all the offices and functions of the department are located together on the top floor of the new hospital making it convenient to manage patients.

There are 5 fully equipped labour ward rooms, a dedicated labour ward theatre & a newly constructed Bereavement Suite. The maternity ward has 17 beds & a separate Triage unit. The women's health ward has 7 beds & a Gynaecology Assessment Area. Ante-natal & Gynaecology clinics are co-located and comprised of 2 examination rooms, 2 history rooms, a treatment suite for colposcopy & hysteroscopy, a day assessment unit / early pregnancy assessment unit & 3 dedicated scanning rooms. There is weekly MDTs, operating on the low grade endometrial cancers some ovarian masses & developing the service in conjunction with the cancer centre in Cheltenham. We have 2 trained robotic surgeons with a third consultant being trained in the new year. Other interests would be considered & welcomed to complement our existing team. There may be an opportunity to undertake a leadership role within the department.

Main duties of the job

This post is to allow expansion of the consultant led provision of obstetric and gynaecological services in Hereford. The successful candidate will be expected to bring a special interest that will complement thedepartmental workload - and to develop and take on a lead role as they become established in the post. There is flexibility within the department to accommodate the skills of the successful candidate. They willbe expected to:

  • Ensure effective teamwork
  • Audit the effectiveness of practice and modify it as required
  • Bring experience to clinical diagnosis and multidisciplinary team working
  • Develop and implement standards of obstetric & gynaecological practice and have a major role in developing specific pathways, guidelines and risk management
  • Train and educate staff in a multidisciplinary team
  • Work in conjunction with the nurses, midwives, administration team, managers and colleagues
  • Provide clinical leadership and lead by example
