Job summary

Wye Valley NHS Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant General Surgeon with Special Interest in Colorectal Surgery, to be based at the County Hospital, Hereford.

This is a full time post attracting 10PAs, consisting of 7.5 DCC PAs and 2.5 SPAs. 2.5 SPAs include 1.5PA in support of appraisal and revalidation, and 1PA of agreed responsibilities (education, training, management governance etc.). 1PA of clinical admin time per week, and 1 PA of clinical ward care (including ward care in the absence of colleagues) are provided within the DCC PAs. Additional PAs and SPAs are negotiable as service needs dictate. A job planning meeting will be expected to take place within 6 weeks of commencement in the post, to agree a formal job plan.

The successful applicant will be expected to actively participate in implementing enhanced recovery programme. Robotic surgery on the Da Vinci platform is available for trained and experienced surgeons with this modality. Training and mentoring will be provided to the successful applicant, as required. Whilst this post is for an adult surgeon, experience and training in the surgical management of common, non-specialised conditions of children is essential. Mentorship and opportunities for joint operating for new Consultant Surgeons is provided.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of colorectal and general surgical diseases, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT.
  • Be committed to the general surgery on call rota.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings.
  • Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department.
  • Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity.
  • Work with the management team to meet the organisation's waiting time targets for all patients.

  • GMC Registration with Licence To Practice
  • Entry on Specialist Register in General Surgery, Or within six months of obtaining Specialist Registration (at the date of interview), or possession of CESR
  • Success in Intercollegiate Specialty Examination or overseas equivalent
  • FRCS or qualification of an equivalent level

Desirable

  • Higher research degree
  • Fellowship in Colorectal Robotic Surgery

Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Broad training/experience in all aspects of General Surgery
  • Training and Experience in Coloproctology
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Experience, training or willingness to be trained to undertake robot assisted laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery

Desirable
