Job summary

The Trust has been successful in securing funding for a Davinci X to support the roll out of Robotic Colorectal Resection - this post will support in the development of this service.

As such, applicants should have had experience, training or willing to be trained for robot assisted laparoscopic surgery.

The successful applicant will be expected to offer robot assisted laparoscopic general and colorectal surgery.

The post holder will actively participate in implementing enhanced recovery programme.

The Colorectal Surgery team consists of 4.5 wte Consultant Surgeons, 4 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 1 stoma nurse.

The colorectal surgical unit exists within the wider general surgery department, and the Consultant on-call rota

The general surgical unit is supported by 3 Specialist Registrars, 7 non-training grade surgeons, 12 foundation year 1 doctors, 3 Physicians Associates and 3 Advanced Clinical Practitioners.

There are four surgeons with Upper GI interests (3 Consultants & 1 Trust Specialist

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a Consultant Surgeon service for the management of colorectal and general surgical diseases, as required for outpatient, inpatient and day-cases at the WVT.
  • Be committed to the general surgery on call rota.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary audit meetings.
  • Be actively involved in postgraduate training / teaching especially for the SpRs in the department.
  • Participate in departmental audit and clinical governance activity.
  • Work with the management team to meet the organisation's waiting time targets for all patients.

About us

The post holder will be expected to actively participate in implementing enhanced recovery programme. Applicants will be assessed against the appended Person Specification which details the required qualifications and competencies for the post.

General Surgical Duties and Job Role

Colorectal Surgery

The successful candidate will be a general surgeon with a major colorectal interest. The colorectal unit undertakes the usual work, which involves approximately 130 resections a year of colorectal cancer. There is also the work-load involved in managing patients with inflammatory bowel disease and pelvic floor disorders. Experience/Training in Laparoscopic colorectal surgery and a commitment to Enhanced Recovery are essential.

The successful candidate will be part of the general surgical emergency on-call rota which will be 1 in 7 with the prospect of cover for colleagues leave. The urology and ENT emergencies are covered by separate on-call rotas.

The Colorectal Cancer Multi-disciplinary Team Meeting takes place weekly, while the IBD MDT meets once a month, pelvic floor MDT once month.

There are well developed clinical referral pathways with tertiary hospitals in the region for the management of liver metastasis (Queen Elizabeth), lung metastasis (Heartlands), Anal Cancer (Gloucester) and Early Rectal Cancer (Cheltenham).

Sub speciality interest exists within colorectal unit, which include pelvic floor surgery, trans-anal endoscopic operating, and paediatric surgery.

The trust is currently working through a selection process to acquire a surgical robot system.
