Job summary

The Ophthalmology Consultant with special interest in Medical Retina is a great opportunity to join a progressive medical and nursing team focussed on delivering high quality specialist care. This post is a substantive post for 10 PA's, clinical commitment timetable is attached- 7. 5 PA's DCC and 2.5PA's for SPA.

The Ophthalmology Consultant is in overall charge of patients and will allocate duties and responsibilities depending on the experience of his or her team.

The appointed Consultant Ophthalmologist will be expected to have a special interest in retinal disease and will integrate into the present structure, and eventually develop and expand the service according to need, including in Powys (Brecon and Llandrindod Wells) where provision of local laser treatment and expansion of injection services would be desirable.

This position will attract relocation expenses up to £8k (in line with the Trust Relocation policy).

Main duties of the job

Surgical work will depend on the experience and interest of the candidate. A high level of competence in cataract surgery and Medical Retina management is expected. Medical audit and continuing postgraduate education will be an integral function of the post and time will be set-aside on the timetable for this. There will be a one-in-seven on-call commitment, taken weekly, every seven weeks according to a rota.

So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties the post holder undertakes to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues.

The post holder undertakes, exceptionally to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

The post holder undertakes exceptionally to be available for such irregular commitments outside normally roistered duties as are essential for continuity of patient care.

The post holder is expected to take a lead in the training of staff in his or her subspecialty interest. We take training very seriously, having three Specialist Trainees on the West Midlands Rotation. This duty is regularly scrutinised by the Deanery responsible for training.
