Job summary

The post provides excellent medical experience, teaching, and opportunities for learning. The post's scheduled hours conform to guidance on junior doctors' hours.

Main duties of the job

Whilst on duty, the post holder has clinical and professional responsibility for their patients. It is also the duty of the post holder to:

  • Keep patients (and/or their carers as appropriate) informed about their condition.
  • Involve patients and/or their carers if appropriate in decision making about their treatment.
  • Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council and comply in particular with the GMC's guidance on "Good Medical Practice".
  • The post holder will be responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan such as:
  • The keeping of records and the provision of reports
  • The proper delegation of tasks
  • Maintaining skills and knowledge

Job description

Job responsibilities

Acute Medicine in Hereford is at the forefront of improving the patient experience and journey through the hospital. Acute Medicine is responsible for the Acute Medical Unit (a 24 bedded inpatient unit), Same Day Emergency Care and the acute on call service. The recently opened Acute Medicine virtual ward represent further recent investment and innovation led by the acute medical team. The Acute Medicine team work within the broader acute floor and works closely with the Emergency medical team and the broader unplanned care service across the county.

The Acute Medical service is well supported by Hospital at Home (providing outpatient intravenous therapy), a GP pathway for DVT, Clinical Nurse Specialists in Cardiology, Respiratory, Stroke, Diabetes, Oncology and Gastroenterology. The Acute Medical team consists of junior doctors (both training and non-training grades), Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Physician Associates (PA).

Hereford County Hospital has an average of 40 medical admissions per day. This is an exciting time in Medicine in Hereford with big plans for change and improvement.

This post provides core training and development in general internal medicine on a fixed term basis and would be ideal to work towards successful completion of CESR application. Additional opportunities to work towards CESR completion in Acute Internal Medicine/ Geriatric Medicine would be encouraged. Progress towards CESR in other physicianly specialties will be considered on an individual basis.

Training opportunities in line with the 2022 Internal medicine stage 2 curriculum will be available and the postholder will be supervised by a designated Educational Supervisor. The requirements of the curriculum means the acute medical take, as well as SDEC and inpatient care of medical patients, will form the core experiences of this post.
