Our friendly, welcoming and driven Rheumatology team boasts a diverse workforce consisting of four substantive Consultants, one Locum Consultant, one Associate Specialist, a Specialty Registrar, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Pharmacists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and a Secretarial Team. This position is a 6 month fixed term post in Rheumatology.
Main duties of the job
This post will cover a number of general Rheumatology clinics with the option to develop specialist skills in ultrasound.
This post will offer:
- Departmental support: The Department has broad clinical interests with particular subspecialty interests in early inflammatory arthritis, systemic vasculitis, ultrasound and osteoporosis.

Biologics service: The department has over 1,000 patients on biologics.

Parenteral Cytotoxic Treatment: There are well developed systems for the prescription and administration of parenteral immunosuppression.

Daycase Facilities: Intravenous cyclophosphamide, infliximab, rituximab, pamidronate, zoledronic acid, ilpoprost, and methylprednisolone and subcutaneous methotrexate and denosumab are given on the MacMillan Renton and Fred Bulmer Units.

Outpatient Services: The department delivers outpatient services at the County Hospital and community hospitals.

Patient Education Group: This is currently held at the County hospital

Diagnostic Facilities: The full range of diagnostic facilities are available. The department has its own high quality ultrasound machine for the exclusive use of the rheumatologists for joint ultrasound.

Education, Clinical trials and research: The Rheumatology department is within the Ambulatory Care Directorate and participates in the full range of education and audit activities within the department of medicine.

The post will consist of 4 general Rheumatology clinics. They will be expected to share responsibilities for in patient Rheumatology ward referral reviews with the Rheumatology Specialist trainee registrar, and to answer ad hoc advice and guidance queries from patients and GPs.
There is no general medicine component to this role.
Teaching
Involvement in and organisation of regular Rheumatology medical student teaching is expected.
Supervision and training
The appointee will be allocated an educational and clinical supervisor. The aim for the post will be to develop Rheumatology ultrasound skills. They will be supported to attend an accredited musculoskeletal ultrasound course, and have the opportunity to attend monthly regional ultrasound training.
Research and audit
It is expected that the post holder will contribute to service-related audit and quality improvement projects with the support of the multi-disciplinary team and Trust audit department. Research interests will be encouraged.
Clinical Governance
- To undertake all work in accordance with Wye Valley NHS Trusts procedures and operating policies
- To adhere to the Trusts Adverse Clinical Incident Policy
- To respond appropriately to complaints and critical incidents
Accountability
The post holder will be immediately accountable to the Department Clinical Lead and subsequently the Divisions Associate Medical Director. The post-holder has a general duty of care for their own health, safety and well being and that of work colleagues, visitors and patients within the hospital. This statutory duty is in addition to any specific risk management or clinical governance accountabilities associated with the post.
