Job summary

Band 4 Cancer Pathway Navigator

We are looking for a full time Cancer Navigator to support our cancer pathways in Gastroenterology and Respiratory, who look after patients on upper gastrointestinal and lung cancer pathways.

The role acts as a co-ordinator and provides administrative support to the Medicine Directorate by improving the pathway for patients referred in with a suspected Cancer.

This role involves working within a multi-discplinary team to ensure our patients on a cancer pathway received diagnosis and treatment within the cancer diagnostic and treatment targets. To review pathways to ensure a reduce length of wait for diagnostic and treatment. To ensure patients are actively managed through their cancer pathway. This is a very busy department and the post holder must have the ability to work under pressure.

Experience of Microsoft Office packages is essential, along with medical terminology and use of electronic booking systems,

The post holder will be expected to have good communication skills and be able to liaise effectively and efficiently with colleagues, professionals and patients.

You must be able to work on your own initiative and have excellent prioritisation, organisational and interpersonal skills.

Main duties of the job

  • To act as a co-ordinator and provide administrative support to the Gastro and Respiratory teams to support the UGI and lung cancer pathways
  • The post holder will work closely with the MDT co-ordinators and multi-disciplinary teams to ensure pathways will reduce the length of wait for diagnostic tests and treatment for cancer, working towards the 28 day diagnostic target and 62 day treatment targets
  • To assist in the site specific data collection processes, diagnostic cancer pathway waiting times and national cancer data sets and input on various information systems.

  • To monitor patients pathways from referral, through diagnostics to treatment, highlighting any potential delays in the pathway.
  • To work closely with the MDT coordinators, Cancer Trackers, Clinical teams and appointments teams across all specialities to ensure patients are actively managed through the cancer pathway.
  • To ensure booking processes are streamlined to facilitate the improved timings of the diagnostic pathways.
  • To ensure referral processes are in place to facilitate fully completed referrals with appropriate blood tests etc in place.
  • To collate data and report to relevant parties on waiting times for diagnostics for cancer pathways.
  • Ensure site-specific data is collected on relevant databases, using identified data collection processes, in agreement with the clinical teams
  • Ensure cover for sickness and annual leave within department, in relation to bookings within the relevant modalities.
  • Ensure data recorded is of good quality and in a timely manner.
  • Maintain standard operating procedures for booking clerks to ensure timely management of all cancer pathway referrals enabling the team to easily and efficiently access core information.
  • Assist in any audits as and when required.
  • Attend weekly PTL Meetings and any other meetings relating to cancer data as necessary.
  • Prepare monthly breaches reports and present to clinical leads.
  • Liaise with Medical Secretaries, Consultants, CNS and Manager as appropriate.
  • To carry out other general office duties to ensure the smooth running of the office, as and when required.
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Escalate any data quality problems encountered.
  • To minimise hazards in the working area and report any identifiable hazards to the line manager. To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area
