We are delighted to invite applications for the role of Consultant in General Anaesthesia at Hereford County Hospital, Wye Valley NHS Trust.
Background
Consultants are expected to be involved in all areas of Clinical Governance, annual appraisals and an appropriate CPD programme, as well as the GMC Revalidation programme.
This is a Generalist job with the scope to accommodate specialist interest if needed, this can be discussed at time of interview.
Main duties of the job
Job Plan
Direct Clinical Care (DCC) Programmed Activities (PA's). The service is currently working towards implementing an activity based job planning for all consultant staff.
An indicative Time Table has been included in the Job Description, please find attached.The job plan will be subject to annual review with any revisions sought by mutual agreement though it is expected that the individual will work with the Directorate management team to ensure that services are delivered efficiently and reflect best practice with processes and governance to match - this will require new and flexible ways of working in the future.
Duties and responsibilities
1. The appointee will be expected to provide a first class anaesthetic service for elective and emergency cases in all surgical specialties. Clinical anaesthetic duties will be undertaken mainly in the theatre suite but may also include Obstetrics.
2. The appointee will take part in regular Departmental, Academic and Audit meetings.
3. The post-holder would be expected to participate in Continuing Medical Education to the levelrequired by the Royal College of Anaesthetists / IBTICM as appropriate to the individual post holders.
4. The post holder is expected to be familiar with and adhere to the Trust's policies on Clinical

In addition, as support for the Hereford Academy, we accept 3rd, 4th and 5th year Birmingham medical students and two Trust F1 rotations include 4 months of Anaesthetics. The appointee will be appointed as a Consultant in Anaesthesia, working in the operating theatres or other appropriate clinical venue with a contribution to the on-call rota (Currently 1 in 12) which coversGeneral Emergencies, Obstetric Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. At the weekend the on call consultant is supported by another consultant who covers 8 till 2pm. This is a separate on-call rota.

Operating TheatresThe Main Operating Theatre suite is situated at the Hereford County Hospital site which has eighttheatres. Elective surgery is conducted from Monday to Friday with some evening scheduled lists. There is a dedicated theatre for the emergency workload at the weekend, with an additional Sunday Trauma list. There are peripheral minor operating sites in Belmont, Bridgenorth, Brecon and Llandrindod Wells which require anaesthetic services and which subject to induction you may be expected to cover.
Critical CareThe Unit is led by Dr Richard Hodgson plus Sisters Tracy Hamer and Kim Barrington and is part of the West Midlands Critical Care network. It is based adjacent to Operating Theatres and has 8 beds splitbetween Level 3 and Level 2 care.The consultants with an interest in Critical Care provide a daytime service with a 1:6 (with prospective cover) week on rota (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm). The out of hours service is provided by the general on call rota whereby all members demonstrate CPD and regular sessions for Critical Care Medicine.
Obstetric AnaesthesiaThe unit delivers approximately 2000 babies per year. There are 3 elective caesarean section lists per week. Dr Duncan Cochran leads the Anaesthetic services to Obstetrics.
Acute Pain ServiceThe pain service is delivered by Dr Charlotte Small, Dr David Radley and CNS Helen Burke. The current focus is on chronic pain. Specialty doctors are able to have training in this field. The acute pain service is delivered by the anaesthetic service with weekly ward rounds delivered by the pain service. Palliative Care receive dual input from the pain service and the local Hospice Team.
Pre-Operative AssessmentThe Pre-Operative Assessment is a nurse delivered, consultant led service with daily Consultant sessions and a CPEX service.
Departmental Teaching, Education, Audit and ResearchThe Department of Anaesthesia provides weekly trainee teaching sessions which all consultants are encouraged to participate in. In addition, the Department provides a half-day of teaching per month where Morbidity and Mortality, journal reviews, educational and audit subjects are presented.
