This new post will join existing consultants. Part time working will be considered. WVT is part of a programme board with Worcestershire which is exploring the benefits of a network. Currently, there is a microbiology laboratory on site at WVT. The post offers the opportunity to be head of department, infection control doctor/lead (ICD), antimicrobial stewardship lead or outpatient parenteral therapy lead (OPAT) according to the preference of the appointee. All roles are incorporated into the 10 PA contract. The ICD role is for WVT only.
The County Hospital is situated in Hereford and is about 10 minutes walk from the city centre and from the railway station. Most of the County Hospital is a modern PFI build opened in 2002.
WVT has established links with Birmingham Medical School and a Head of Academy is in post. Twelve medical students are regularly assigned to the hospital. From 2022, medical students are expected from the new Three Counties Medical School.

Main duties of the job
Responsibilities of the post include direct clinical care (DCC) and proactive liaison in a timely manner with consultant colleagues, other hospital staff, medical microbiology colleagues and lead respiratory physicians for tuberculosis management, GPs and the antimicrobial pharmacist. There are no infectious disease physicians at WVT and GUM is outsourced to a private provider with no clinical input from WVT.
The consultants in infection share clinical duties. There is an ITU ward round daily
The consultants in infection attend 3 MDTs - TB and NTM 3 monthly: prosthetic joint infections monthly and OPAT weekly. This latter consists of pharmacy and the community nurses. The consultant in charge of the patient retains clinical responsibility. The consultants in infection also alternate attendance at a multi-disciplinary clinic for patients with infected diabetic foot ulcers.
The consultant in infection who leads on antimicrobial stewardship attends the Medicines Safety Committee; chairs the 6 monthly Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee and meets monthly with the antimicrobial stewardship team.
The head of department attends pathology board
The appointee will take equal (or an appropriate share of) responsibility for departmental commitments.
The apportionment and possible rotation of roles will be decided between the appointee and the existing consultants
About us
Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT) is a provider of health care across Herefordshire and consists of acute and community services. It runs the County Hospital in Hereford, along with community hospitals in Ross-on-Wye, Leominster and Bromyard. The County Hospital is a district general hospital which provides adult and neonatal intensive care and has an emergency department on site.
