Senior Clinical Fellow Neonates

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a post in our Neonatal department at New Cross Hospital Wolverhampton for a Neonatal Clinical Fellow. This post is for a tier 2 paediatric doctor (ST4 and above) interested in pursuing a career in neonatology.

The post is based at tertiary NICU, New Cross Hospital which has 26 cots. New Cross Hospital is the tertiary referral centre for high risk Obstetric and Neonatal care with over 5000 deliveries per year. There are local neonatal units based at Walsall and Russells Hall Hospital which form part of the New-born Services Managed Clinical Service within West Midlands ODN linked to New Cross Hospital neonatal unit. It is essential that applicants have previous experience in Neonates in a closely allied specialty (UK or equivalent). Full MRCPCH or equivalent level is highly desirable. There is excellent training in Neonatology with first class facilities, research experience, a friendly atmosphere and close working arrangements with highly trained neonatal nurses.

Main duties of the job

To provide a clinical service in Neonatal Medicine, to provide cover for labour ward, the post-natal wards and working closely with the Consultants, other middle grade and junior grade doctors and nursing staff. There may also arise the opportunity for the post holder to provide supervision and clinical support to a team of Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (ANNPs) and Enhanced Practice (EP) nurses who work across all areas of the neonatal unit, including the post-natal ward and labour ward.

The fellow will work on average on a 1:7 shift based rota. Shift times are 0900-1700 for a standard working day, 0900-2200 for a daytime on call and 2100-1000 for a night shift.

The post will be for 12 months in the first instance, there will be a possibility of extension.

1) To support the inpatient service in Neonatal services at New Cross Hospital.

  4. Duties will involve neonatal intensive care ward cover, post-natal and transitional care and attendance at births where resuscitation may be needed. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care of neonatal patients under supervision.
  5. The post holder will be responsible for the maintenance of proper case records and investigations on patients, and correspondence with General Practitioners and others as required.

Clinical audit/departmental teaching

The Trust has a supportive environment and is still small enough for personal contact with colleagues from a wide variety of disciplines.

Neonatal teaching takes place most days. There is a regular rota for teaching and the audit sessions. There is a multidisciplinary mortality and morbidity meeting held every month.

The appointment is a whole-time appointment. The appointment will be to the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust.

The post holder will be managerially accountable to the Clinical Director of Neonatal services.

Junior Medical Staff should ensure that only two members of each rota is on leave at one time. Approval for leave is at the discretion of the relevant Consultants and is department on continuity of patient care.

The appointment is subject to satisfactory health clearance and clearance by the Disclosure and Barring Service (Enhanced DBS).

The appointed doctor accepts that he/she will perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at consultant request, though juniors will not be required to undertake this work for prolonged periods on a regular basis.
