Job summary

The post holder is expected to work as part of a team within the Transfusion Laboratory. After training they will be required to: -

Carry out basic blood transfusion traceability procedures and provide support to the Transfusion Practitioners to ensure the quality management system for the hospital transfusion laboratory starts from the receipt of the blood from the blood centre to the time the unit is transfused or otherwise disposed of.

The post holder will at all times promote GDP (Good Distribution Practice) which requires us to "ensure that storage conditions are observed at all times, including during transportation."

Concentration and attention to detail and the ability to be WARM (Work Accurately Reduce Mistakes) are essential to these processes and form the greater part of the working day.

Main duties of the job

Booking requests for and blood group and antibody screen, requests for blood products, haemolytic disease of the new-born and batch products. Also, to deal with any specimen rejections and to alert the BMS team of any urgent or complex requests.

Deal with any telephone queries in blood transfusion

To process samples received in the laboratory for group and antibody screening on the automated grouping analysers which will include topping up of consumables, maintenance, running quality control (letting the BMS know when the results need to be accepted), quality assurance and troubleshooting in the event of unexpected errors.

To check outstanding lists for blood transfusion tests and chase up results which fall outside of the departmental stated TATs

Temperature probe testing to support cold chain officer or cover of their absence.

Receipt of blood products, batch products and stock rotation.
