Job summary

The New Cross Hospital ED team are looking to appoint a new Consultant in Emergency Medicine. For more information, please see the attached application pack.

Urgent & Emergency Care Centre

The Urgent & Emergency Care Centre opened in November 2015. The provision of redesigned services within this new facility supports significant operational benefits for Emergency Services within the Trust and across Wolverhampton.

The department provides a 24 hour emergency service, with Consultant cover until 2am and middle grade doctors 24 hours per day. We also have a team of Advanced Clinical and Extended Nurse practitioners who compliment the medical staff and provide a consistency of care.

The department is supported by Acute Physicians who work in the department from 10.00 - 20.00. The Acute Physicians (Physician A) see all medical patients who are potential admissions with a view to avoiding admission by the use of appropriate community services or hot clinic appointments.

The EM consultants manage conditions in house such as burns, hand and finger injuries, facial wounds and children's forearm fracture management which prevents unnecessary admissions. We have 6 Consultants who specialise solely in paediatrics and another 2 who are dual accredited.

Main duties of the job

Emergency Department

The Emergency Department sits within the Emergency Group within Division Two. The Group is represented on the Divisional Management Board by the Clinical Director.

The Group is managed by the Clinical Director (Dr Ward) Matron and Group Manager. Group Meetings are held weekly which are attended by the above three, the senior medical staff (Consultants and Associate Specialists) and senior nursing staff.

The Group is responsible for its delivery of clinical care and its budget through the management of its staff and resources.

The catchment area includes Wolverhampton, South Staffordshire and East Shropshire and consequently it has a varied workload from urban and rural areas. It sees approximately 110,000 new patients a year of which 18% are children under 16 years of age and is a designated Major Trauma unit.

The group structure is as follows:

Dr Helen Ward Clinical Director

Sarah Wilmshurst Group Manager

Michelle Redding Senior Matron
