Job summary

The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust is seeking a highly motivated dosimetrist from a clinical technology or therapeutic radiographer background to join our friendly and forward thinking treatment planning team in the Radiotherapy Physics Subdivision.

Our purpose-built cancer centre is home to: 4 Elekta Versa HD linear accelerators with IGRT, VMAT, FFF and EPID dosimetry capability. The department has two wide bore 4D CT scanners with gating capabilities. Additional Active Breathing Coordinator systems are also available allowing SBRT development. Further treatment units include, Gulmay orthovoltage, Flexitron HDR, and a Flexitron PDR. Supporting software currently includes Pinnacle TPS, Mosaiq Record and Verify system, Prosoma Virtual Simulator and Oncentra Masterplan Brachytherapy software, IMSure QA Software and Sun Nuclear ArcCHECK dose/plan verification system. The post requires an appropriate honours degree in a relevant discipline (or demonstrable equivalent), and eligibility for RCT or HCPC registration.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be the dosimetrist lead for SABR treatment, helping develop, implement and maintain the SABR service. Duties include primarily taking a leading role in the production and final checks of complex external beam treatment plans including three / four dimensional plans. There will also be a requirement to participate in a range of other clinical activities required for the support of the radiotherapy service and clinical trials. The candidate is expected to have a good understanding of radiotherapy physics in its application to treatment planning.

A substantial level of relevant radiotherapy skills and experience are necessary to enable the post holder to fulfil the duties set out in the job description.

Job responsibilities

To be managerially and technically responsible to the Consultant Physicist (Radiotherapy Physics) for the services provided by the Group.

To deputise as required for the Line Manager of Radiotherapy Treatment Planning.

To act as SABR lead in planning support, providing specialist technical knowledge to develop, implement and maintain the SABR service.

To provide specialist technical expertise in Treatment Planning and Virtual Simulation and to be responsible for, and supervise, the completion of a broad range of standard radiotherapy external beam and brachytherapy treatment plans.

To be responsible for the preparation of treatment plans utilising complex three-dimensional techniques, including conformal treatments with customised blocking or multi-leaf collimator, VMAT, IMRT and IGBT.

To be responsible for the completion of final checking procedures on treatment plans utilising complex three-dimensional techniques, including conformal treatments with customised blocking or multi-leaf collimator,and on a range of standard less complex plans.

To be responsible for the review and approval of check radiographs and portal images, CBCT for technical accuracy.

To liaise and co-operate with consultant clinical oncologists, mould room, radiographic and other staff in the discussion and completion of individual patients requirements for treatment.

To be expert in the clinical use of the range of treatment planning software in use within the department, including virtual simulation systems and record and verify systems

To participate in the development and implementation of new treatment planning techniques and equipment within the department.

To participate in quality assurance test procedures on the radiotherapy treatment planning system.

To participate in the production and updating of departmental quality procedures for radiotherapy treatment planning.

To attend departmental radiotherapy MDT and peer-review meetings representing radiotherapy treatment planning.

To participate in the appraisal process of junior staff.

To conform to safe working practices in the work area, particularly with regard to patient and staff safety.

To be responsible for the training of technical staff, and to act as work based supervisor for Clinical Technology students. To participate in the training of other staff, who may be working within the treatmentplanning section.

To be responsible for the maintenance of records and to complete other administrative duties that may be required.

To demonstrate a flexible approach to the needs of the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department.

To be available for on-call and overtime work as necessary.To complete CPD to the relevant required standard

To conform to departmental policies and procedures.

To be aware of governance and risk management issues within the Department.

To undertake any other duties that may be appropriate to meet the needs of the service.

Strong professional links will be maintained within the Department and externally, in particular with the Radiotherapy Department.
