Job summary

An exciting new opportunity has become available for Physician Associates (PAs) to join The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. We invite both newly qualified and experienced PAs to apply. You will provide expert assistance to the consultant team and within the wider multi-disciplinary team, participating in all aspects of clinical activities.

You will be part of a newly formed team of PAs within surgery and will work with a number of specialities to provide comprehensive care to non-elective patients. The Surgical Services Group includes the following specialities: General Surgery, Urology, Vascular surgery (as part of a network with Dudley Group of Hospitals), Upper Gastrointestinal, Breast surgery, and Paediatrics. Once the team is established and embedded within the non-elective service, there will be opportunities to sub-specialise, gain experience and extend your role into elective care.

For a proportion of the time, you will be working within the ward team reviewing patients, requesting and interpreting investigations and implementing management plans. As part of your training, you will partake in a weekly theatre session with a clinical trainer where you will have the opportunity to develop your surgical skills under direct supervision.

Main duties of the job

You will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge and assist in clinical teaching and supervision of colleagues and students. You will demonstrate critical thinking in the clinical decision-making process leading to safe delivery of care for all patients. Supervision will be provided by a consultant mentor to oversee your career development. You will also be encouraged to partake in surgical training, for example the Basic Surgical Skills Course (BSSC) or the Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) course.

You will be joining an established and expanding PA workforce across the Trust. The role is well supported by a weekly PA teaching programme and PA forum. You will be expected to be an excellent role model and ambassador for PAs and to represent the Department at local and external meetings as appropriate. You will participate in the departmental teaching programme, audit and clinical governance.
