Therapy Support Worker

Job summary

This role involves supporting the therapy team to deliver an individualised rehabilitation programme to our Spinal Cord Injury patients. The post holder will work across the therapy team (with Occupational Therapists and Physiotherapists) and as part of the wider multi-disciplinary team on the Midland Centre for Spinal Injuries.

Main duties of the job

oTo participate in/and implement the treatment of patients on the Spinal Injuries Unit and within the Therapy department (this will include patients who have complex physical and psychological conditions).

oTo undertake administration and clerical duties within the Therapy Department.

oTo provide clinical and non clinical support to the Therapy staff in order to maintain efficient organisation of the Therapy service.

o To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure a multidisciplinary service.

Job responsibilities

- To participate in and implement the treatment of patients in the MCSI, hydrotherapy pool, gym, OT treatment area, rehabilitation flat including wheelchair skills following assessment by a Therapist.

-To move, handle or position patients safely within the limits of their condition.

-To be responsible for performing prescribed tests/electrical treatments.

- Supervise and monitor patients condition and/or changes, during treatment programmes in the therapy department or hydrotherapy pool.

- To participate in the treatment of patients who are seriously/terminally ill, or anxious, or of different ethnic and religious beliefs. (Communication skills of persuasion, motivation, explanation, empathy, reassurance and encouragement are needed).

- To participate in patient orientated goal setting/keyworker meetings and communicate with all members of the multidisciplinary team regarding patients rehabilitation and progress.

- To be responsible for maintaining accurate and comprehensive patient treatment records in line with CSP and the Trusts standards.

- To transport patients in wheelchairs/beds to and from the wards.

- To provide and distribute liquid refreshments to patients, during and after exercise programmes.

- To escort and assist patients with dressing/undressing for hydrotherapy or toilet requirements (using CNST guidelines when patients are barrier nursed)

- To prepare, assess and maintain equipment and patient aids/appliances.

- To be responsible for the safe and competent use of all electrotherapy equipment,

gym/therapy equipment and patient aids/appliances.

- To perform minor adjustments and basic maintenance to wheelchairs thus ensuring patient safety and comfort.
