Job summary
The doctor will join a busy department of 7 Rheumatologists and multi-disciplinary team and provide management of a case load of rheumatology patients, including supporting consultant's Out-Patient Clinics, and care of Rheumatology In-Patients.
The main duties and responsibilities of the post are concerned with the management of rheumatology and Metabolic patients both in out-patient clinic and as day case or in-patients. There is also a responsibility to report on DEXA images.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work under the clinical supervision of Dr Askari and Dr Rakieh as clinical leads for each specialty.
Appropriate resource and support will be agreed with the clinical manager as part of the job planning and objective setting process.
A detailed job plan will be agreed with the appointee and consideration will be given to providing experience in areas of the individual's professional interest.
Main duties and responsibilities:
- Specialty doctor delivering rheumatology and Metabolic services at Oswestry, in conjunction with Rheumatologists and the multidisciplinary teams across various sites.
- Reporting of DEXA images undertaken at the Oswestry site
- Ensure quality of care, patient safety and clinical effectiveness are built into practice, evaluated, and improved.
- To participate in service improvement initiatives, such as implementation of NICE guidance and quality standards to improve the patient experience.
- To engage with the multidisciplinary team and service managers to improve patient care.
- Liaise constructively with other healthcare and social care providers to ensure effective working and seamless patient care across organisations.

The bulk of the workload involves the care of people with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, vasculitis, lupus and related inflammatory disorders. There are currently some 600 people on TNF-inhibitors in Shropshire and increasing numbers being treated with rituximab, tocilizumab and other biologic agents. We adhere rigorously to the monitoring requirements of the BSR Biologics Register and assessments are carried out by our 7 Nurse Specialists.
The rheumatology service is run from Oswestry with clinics in the district hospital in Shrewsbury and community hospitals in Ludlow and Newtown, Powys, and Euston House Telford.
The department at Oswestry comprises shared out-patient clinics, a DeXA scanner, a day case unit for infusions, four rehabilitation beds on Sheldon ward, a science lab for NTX testing and offices for clinical and administrative staff. The Rheumatologists provide an in-reach service to in-patients at Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals. The post holder will be based at Oswestry but may be required to undertake clinics around the region with consultant supervision.
