Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable person to work as part of the Operating Department Orderly Team. Applicants should aware that this is a physically demanding job as it involves the collection of patients from the Admission on Day of surgery ward and then returning them to the wards after surgery.

The role involves various forms of logistical tasks including moving items within the department of differing size and weights. The position includes the removal of a large amount of clinical and non-clinical waste from the department to the outside waste compound ensuring it is segregated throughout to ensure no cross contamination

Various cleaning duties such as the cleaning of patient theatre trolleys and theatre environmental cleaning is an essential part of the Orderly role.

Main duties of the job

  1. To assist Theatre Support Worker in the safe collection of the pre-operative patient from Baschurch following formal training.
  2. Along with TSW, responsible for escorting the pre-operative patient from the in-patient ward to theatre.
  3. Ensure all necessary equipment that will be required for the patient post-operatively is brought up with the patient when collected.
  4. Ensure the correct equipment/trolleys are available for each patient in each theatre and are in good working order i.e., Spinal trolley, shoulder trolley etc.
  5. Be able to communicate tactfully and sensitively with patients who are nervous or anxious prior to their surgery, especially children and their parents.
  6. Transfer the patient from bed to the correct theatre trolley/wheelchair within the preoperative area.
  7. Ensure the beds are made up according to the type of surgery each patient is receiving.
  8. Escort patients' relatives from the anaesthetic room if required.
  9. Apply foot pads and foot pumps to the patients post-operatively in recovery.
  10. Assist with turning of patients both within recovery and theatres.
  11. Transfer patients back to wards with a trained nurse post-operatively.
  12. Replenish and clean Recovery bed spaces after use if needed.
  13. Always maintain patient confidentiality.

Job responsibilities

RECOVERY DUTIES

Enhanced Recovery is an encouraging way of motivating our patients to get moving and therefore spend less time in hospital. This now involves taking the patient from the Recovery Department via X-ray and then onto the ward. We do this in partnership with the main hospital porters so being a good Team worker is of vital importance.

GENERAL DUTIES

1. Assist with cleaning theatre trolleys to a high standard after use and prepare them for next patient.

2. Responsible for the collection and return of pharmacy boxes and the collection and distribution of pharmacy theatre supplies daily.

3. Correct handling and disposal of sharps containers

4. Maintain stock levels as designated.

5. Moving of clean beds and trolleys as required for post-operative patients.

6. Move clinical waste to cages, to waste receptacles outside the theatre unit frequently throughout the day.

7. Collect all equipment loaned to the wards. This will include Foot pump boxes, patient troughs, any intravenous pumps, pillows etc, daily.

8. Ensure linen trolley and warming cabinet are clean and stocked up regularly throughout the day.

9. Sort out staff uniforms/scrubs daily and distribute appropriately into relevant changing rooms.

10. Act as a mentor and a source of information for new staff.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

1. Change O2 / CO2 cylinders, check levels and replace as required.

2. Assemble/convert operative tables daily.

3. You will be allocated a shift that is solely responsible for removing clinical waste from the Theatre Department. On this day you will also be available for transporting blood samples to the labs for processing.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

1. Occasionally required to turn or move patients from bed to trolley, move heavy equipment or occasionally help to prevent patients hurting themselves post-operatively.

2. Regularly required to change from one job to another collecting patients from the wards, turning or moving patients, collecting stock (pads, pumps etc), cleaning theatre trolleys.

3. Collecting stores, delivering urgent specimens i.e., frozen sections/muscle biopsy if you are allocated clinical waste.

4. Working in a high-risk area, regularly exposed to body fluids and other substances hazardous to health.

5. Transfer patients from bed to trolley and escort patient from wards.

6. Assist in theatre with transferring or turning of unconscious patients.

7. Frequently exposed to distressed children and parents who are escorted to theatre.
