We are now recruiting for our Oswestry Musculoskeletal Oncology Fellowship for a fixed term contract from 1st August 2024 to 1st August 2025.

NB Please note a separate Senior Fellowship is currently advertised commencing 2 August 2023.

This Oswestry Musculoskeletal Oncology Clinical Fellowship post is designed to accommodate a ST3 clinical doctor with a view to supporting experience and potentially advancement into orthopaedic training, a doctor who has completed or is completing their MRCS. The doctor will contribute to the provision of MSK Oncology orthopaedic surgery within the Trust. The post can be designed around the learning requirements of the postholder.

The Musculoskeletal Tumour Service at RJAH is one of the five Bone Sarcoma units commissioned by NHS England. It provides a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours. It is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS) along with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

1. Support all three consultants in their out-patient clinics.

2. Assist all three consultants in their theatre lists.

3. Assessment of new patients, with consultant supervision.

4. Clerk admissions where required and be responsible for the day-to-day care of in-patients.

5. Attendance on ward rounds.

6. Discharge requirements for in-patients.

7. To assist with any other aspects of patient care as appropriate.

8. To assist in clinic preparation duties

It also works with partner organisation to provide specialist treatment for bone tumours and community based rheumatology services.

The Trust provides services for a population well in excess of 750,000 people. The normal catchment area includes Shropshire, North Wales, Mid Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, Herefordshire, Staffordshire, Stoke on Trent. The hospital receives secondary and tertiary referrals from an even wider area due to the specialist nature of its work.

Bone Tumour Service

The Musculoskeletal Tumour Service at RJAH is one of the five Bone Sarcoma units commissioned by NHS England. It provides a comprehensive service in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumours. It is part of the Greater Manchester and Oswestry Sarcoma Service (GMOSS) along with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

This appointment is to join the existing team of 3 consultants. The Montgomery Unit, a purpose built Musculoskeletal Oncology Unit, opened in 2016. It has a clinic suite of 3 consulting rooms, a treatment room, physiotherapy room, reception area, consultants office/conference room, secretarial and nursing offices.

Within the same new build is Oswald Ward which has ten single bed en-suite rooms, Baschurch Day Surgical Unit and the High Dependency Unit.

Our Services

The RJAH Orthopaedic Hospital is a 169 bedded specialist hospital, dealing primarily with elective Orthopaedics. Shropshire, North and Mid Wales. There are a number of specialised Units within the hospital including; Arthroplasty, Rheumatology, The West Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries (MCSI), Department of Spinal Disorders, Foot and Ankle, Hand and Microsurgery, Musculoskeletal Tumours and the Paediatric Orthopaedic Department and a Care of the Elderly until August 2021 Page 2 of 5 Unit. The Arthritis Research Centre was opened in 1996 highlighting the research activity for which the hospital is known. With a continuous increase in activity, over 11,500 procedures are performed in our theatres each year.

The placement is for a post graduate orthopaedic surgeon who has a commitment to a career in orthopaedic surgery, with a secondary interest in research.

The Trust Medical Structure

The junior staffing at Oswestry consists of 18 Specialty Registrars in training who will usually be in the more senior years of training (ST5 ST8), working alongside 4/5 Service Grade Registrars.

At present there are 43 consultant orthopaedic surgeons working at the Trust. The Surgeons are divided into the following units:

Library Facilities

The Francis Costello Library provides a high quality multidisciplinary service to improve patient care and support clinical effectiveness research, education and lifelong learning for all, encouraging use of the evidence base in all aspects of RJAH activity to support the Trust to be the leading orthopaedic centre in the UK.

The library offers over 4000 books and journals covering all health related disciplines but with a specialist emphasis on orthopaedic and musculoskeletal medicine. Specialist journals are also available, many electronically via ATHENS password, and the library also provides an article request service for papers which are not available within our own stock. Mediated literature searches, help and advice and a comprehensive information skills training programme are also available.

The library works in close alliance with other health libraries within the area and in a recent survey of educational resources for doctors in training the Trust scored highly.
