Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Physician Associate to join us at Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS foundation Trust which is rated outstanding for its care and delivers the best patient experience in the NHS (according to the Adult Inpatient Survey).

The physician associate will have completed the Physician Associate Postgraduate Diploma, and be registered on the UK Physician Associate Register (the PA Managed Voluntary Register") and have a passion for developing a career in Orthopaedics whilst working within their scope of clinical practice.

The Physician Associate will be required to work autonomously within the Arthroplasty Team within their scope of practice, providing a wide range of services within the Clinical, Theatre and Ward environment including providing ward cover for peri-operative surgical patients, and assessment of the acutely unwell patient.

Main duties of the job

This role is very much a patient facing role, the successful candidate will be responsible for the provision of a clinical service, working as part of the practice multidisciplinary team, delivering care within their scope of practice to patients.

The physician associate will be required to work autonomously within the Arthoplasty Team, providing a range of services such as assessment, diagnosis, treatment, telephone triage, clinical decision-making and referring patients appropriately. They will also be required to carry out ward rounds for Orthopaedic Patients including developing Care Plans.

The post is initially for 12 months with a view of an extension.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  1. To provide ward cover for peri-operative surgical patients, acute and routine; assessment of the acutely unwell patient including but not limited to taking blood, cannulation, urinary catheters, arterial blood gases, ECG interpretation, wound reviews and escalation to medical team
  2. Partake in daily ward round with registrars and nursing teams, delegating daily jobs where required.
  3. Recommend and explain appropriate diagnostic tests, in depth discussion of care plans with patients following morning ward round.
  4. Request and interpret results of laboratory investigations when necessary.
  5. Holding ward cover bleep during working hours
  6. Be accountable for care given and to comply with the Fitness to Practice and Code of Conduct standard as established by the UK Physician Associate Register (the PA Managed Voluntary Register) and subsequently the appropriate statutory regulating body when in place. They must within the framework of the scope of professional practice.
  7. Exercise a high degree of personal autonomy when assessing and planning care pathways for patients.
  8. In conjunction with the consultant team, be responsible for co-ordinating the admission, assessment, surgery, and discharge arrangements of patients.
  9. To admit and discharge patients against care pathways/guidelines and refer on to other members of the multi-disciplinary team as required.
  10. Support and contribute to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries and support optimising bed capacity.
  11. To deliver compassionate care maintaining the patients privacy and dignity.
  12. Ensure accurate, appropriate, and timely documentation for all aspects of the patients pathway and care is maintained.
  13. Maintenance of outpatient and inpatient records with regular legible documentation.
  14. Population of detailed discharge summaries to GPs to include any changes in medication or specific follow up care plans for patients.
  15. You will receive close supervision, teaching, training, and mentorship enabling you to embed core skills, knowledge, and competencies.
  16. You will need to have excellent communication and team working skills, be enthusiastic and have a strong drive to develop your clinical skills
  17. Physician Associates will provide expert assistance to Medical Workforce in their specialty and the wider multidisciplinary team and will participate in all aspects of the teams activities as appropriate. They will be expected to perform delegated duties with a high degree of clinical skill and knowledge and to assist in clinical teaching and supervision of colleagues and students.
  18. The post holder will recognise the importance of the multidisciplinary team in delivering a high quality, patient centred service. They will be accountable for ensuring that patient care is always of a high standard and that standards of care and treatment meet their departments requirements.
  19. Physician Associates will be supervised by a designated Consultant with individual mentorship to oversee career development.
  20. The post holder will possess, develop, and maintain extensive specialist knowledge and experience in the department, acting as a resource for the clinical team and allied health professionals.
