Job summary

We have exceiting opportunities to join the Trust as an Apprentice New to Care/HCA

The apprenticeship is for a period of 18 month, with hours up to full time available.

The Apprentice Health Care Assistant Role will be based clinically on a Ward within the Trust, working under the direct supervision of qualified staff in the delivery of high quality, direct patient care for all patients and their families/carers. Throughout the apprenticeship you will be expected to develop your knowledge and skills to that of a competent Health Care Assistant and contribute to the ongoing continuity of good team spirit.

Apprenticeship wage £5.28 per hour

After 12 months in post entitlement to the minimum wage is based on their age

  • For those aged 23 & over the rate will be £10.42 per hour
  • For 21 and 22 year olds the rate will be £10.18 per hour
  • For those aged 18 - 20 it will be £7.49 per hour.

This vacancy is not suitable for anyone under the age of 18.

Main duties of the job

The HCA apprentice will assist patients in all activities of daily living, providing patient care, and undertaking physiological measurements such as height, weight, temperature, pulse and blood pressure.

During the first part of your apprenticeship you will be supported to achieve the Care Certificate which forms part of your induction and covers the fundamental skills needed to provide quality care and following this you will have the opportunity to complete level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care.

Job description

Job responsibilities

Maintain good interpersonal relationships with patients, relatives and staff, whilst maintaining confidentiality.

Under the direct/indirect supervision of trained staff, be able to assist patients in all activities of daily living within own level of competencies.

Assist patients to maintain and improve their mobility to their full potential. Working with the senior nurse to ensure you are aware of the patients level of ability and assisting with dressing, promoting independence as much as possible within the boundaries of the patients functional ability.

Encouraging the patients to cooperate with prescribed treatments and care required.

Provide patient care, which may require the use of physical effort to roll, manoeuvre and stand patients. The use of manual handling equipment and training is essential, to reduce physical strain and maintain safety of the patient. Annual manual handling training is mandatory.

Assist other team members to maintain the skin integrity of all patients and have a working knowledge of all aids that are available to support this practice.

Provide a safe and clean environment for patients by having and demonstrating a working knowledge of all Health and Safety issues.

Undertake a range of physiological measurements using the appropriate equipment including height, weight, temperature, pulse, breathing rate and blood pressure.

Assist patients to select and advise patients on appropriate dietary intake. Have a working knowledge of available supplementary foods, which may be prescribed. Provide assistance and monitoring with eating and drinking as required, whilst still attempting to promote patients' independence.

To have a basic understanding in the safe use of wheelchairs, commodes and other equipment used on the unit.

Ensure due regard is given to the customs, culture, values and spiritual beliefs of the patient, family, carers and staff. To uphold the Trust's Diversity/Equal Opportunities Policy.

Ensure due regard is given to the safety of patients belongings according to Trust policies.

Be able to handle waste body fluids, ensuring correct disposal according to Trust policies. Take specimens of urine, faeces, sputum, wound and other swabs, when requested to do so from a qualified nurse.

Assist with escort duties as required. Chaperoning patients during medical examinations, assisting the medic and reporting verbal instructions to the qualified nurse.

Basic life support skills are essential, and will be updated at least yearly.

Ability to instigate help and support staff in the event of an emergency.

Be accountable for own practice, and take every reasonable opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and skills.

To undertake statutory training on ELearning and face to face training to ensure adherence to Trust policy and current legislation.

Participate in a yearly appraisal, setting personal objectives for own personal development.

Assist other members of the multidisciplinary team as and when required.

Assist other members of the team in the maintenance and control of stock/equipment e.g., linen, supplies etc. Regularly stock up equipment, reporting inadequate stock levels to a qualified nurse.

Contact with complex or sensitive information about patients, dealing will confrontation where you will be able to reassure, calm and refer to a senior nurse.

Be able to recognise when there is a need to refer issues to a qualified nurse or a more senior member of the multidisciplinary team.

To participate in the nursing huddles, sharing any relevant information regarding the patients progress.
