Job summary
The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe. It's a world-renowned institution and an exciting place to work, full of challenges and opportunities.
The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital (RJAH) is one of the leading specialist orthopaedic hospitals in the country, with some of the highest levels of staff and patient satisfaction, as well as a strong reputation for innovation. We work together as a team of over 1,600 expert members of staff to make a difference for our patients and their families.
Our latest CQC Report was published in February 2019 and saw us rated as 'Good' overall and 'Outstanding' for care.
We are seeking to appoint a general paediatric consultant to join and complement our dynamic team. We are a nationally recognised centre of excellence and tertiary referral centre for paediatric neuromuscular services and are in the process of expanding our outpatient paediatric services. The role would see you working alongside the newly appointed paediatric respiratory consultant who is based at both RJAH and BCH, paediatricians and the paediatric surgeons to provide general paediatric services and also to develop a specialist service.
The successful candidate would also help provide consultant cover for Alice Ward (our paediatric ward) and includes non-resident general paediatric consultant support out of hours.
This is an excellent opportunity for a half time substantive post of Paediatric Consultant.
Main duties of the job
The post is based on 5 programmed activities of work per week, subject to job planning review.
Main Duties:
- All aspects of paediatric ward cover.
- Assessment of all patients admitted to ward.
- Governance - Management of Medical Input into development of guidelines, policies, and audit.
- Outpatient Paediatric care including General Paediatrics
The introduction of this post aims to support improved direct Consultant supervised and delivered care on a day-to-day basis (in line with RCPCH Acute Care Standards) and continuity and efficiency of care on an annual basis. Although the staffing model is unable to support a 'Consultant of the week' model we are evolving our service to a dedicated Consultant of the day model with dedicated availability for acute care. The Consultant of the day will be responsible for the immediate management and oversight of all patients admitted during the 24-hour period and undertaking the daily ward round. The working ethos of the team is such that all Consultants will contribute when possible and available to the continuity of care of cases in their complex caseload, particularly complex cases.
This post provides the opportunity to develop services in a specialist area to build upon the existing neuromuscular and rehabilitation services. The ambition is to develop an in-house service that can build upon the relationship with supporting services and to build relationships with surrounding trusts in order to deliver excellent paediatric care.
About us
The Theatre Unit at RJAH comprises of 12 Theatres; 10 are located in the main theatre unit and 2 in our 'Menzies' unit, alongside a Recovery unit, a HDU and an on-site TSSU. We cover a wide spectrum of primarily elective Orthopaedic surgery including, but not exclusively, Revision & Primary Arthroplasty, Upper limb, Lower Limb, Sports Injuries, Spines, Tumour and Paediatrics.
Our continued success is accomplished through the skills and expertise of our staff, which is underpinned by our values: Friendly, Caring, Excellence, Professional and Respect. If your values align to ours, and you would like to join us in aspiring to deliver world class patient care, we would love to hear from you.
We have a range of fantastic staff benefits on offer to everyone who joins RJAH and you'll have access to state-of-the-art facilities and outstanding professional development opportunities.
RJAH has strong links with a range of universities including Staffordshire, Keele, Glyndwr, Chester and Birmingham.
Shropshire is also one of the most attractive parts of the country, with a rich historic culture and excellent transport links. The hospital is located on a site outside Oswestry, just off the A5. The nearest train station is in Gobowen, approximately two miles from the hospital. The station is part of the Chester to Birmingham line.
