Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Ophthalmology Department at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital as a Band 2 Trainee Ophthalmic Assistant. Following successful completion of a range of ophthalmic competencies there will be an automatic progression to a Band 3 Ophthalmic Assistant post.
We are looking for a caring and motivated individual who has a genuine interest in Ophthalmology. The successful candidate must have good communication skills and be able to work well as part of a friendly team in a busy and dynamic environment. In return, the post offers the opportunity for further development and training within Ophthalmology.
There may be a possibility of cross site working at Ophthalmology Outpatients at The Princess Royal Hospital Hospital, Telford, so flexibility is a must. Some weekend and evening working will be required.
Main duties of the job
The position will involve undertaking a variety of skills such as carrying out visual acuities, visual field testing, ocular coherence tomography, assisting with minor ops and scrubbing to assist with intravitreal injections.
About us
A newly constructed theatre suite specialising in cataract surgery opened in February 2021 at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and it is anticipated there will be future opportunities to rotate into this area, offering further diversity to the role.

Working as part of a team in a busy outpatient clinic. Will be trained to undertake various ophthalmic competencies.
