Job summary
An excellent opportunity has arisen to become part of the Obstetric Bleeding Study UK (OBS UK) research and improvement team. The post will commence in February 2024 and will end in April 2026, with the study due to finish in January 2027. The post is for a period of 27 months.
The Obstetric Bleeding Study UK (OBS UK) is an NIHR-funded study investigatingPost-Partum Haemorrhage (PPH). Starting in February 2024, the study will implement a PPH care bundle based on the OBS Cymru care bundle, as a quality improvement programme in 36 UK-based maternity units. The study is sponsored by Cardiff University, with support from the Cardiff Trials Unit. Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust is the lead English NHS Trust.
The successful candidate may choose to base their clinical work in either Cardiff and Vale University Health Board or The Shrewsbury and Telford NHS Trust and will be line managed for this work accordingly with appropriate contractual arrangements.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties will include:
- Undertake elective and emergency maternity theatre sessions, labour analgesia, follow ups and high-risk obstetric clinics
- To participate in the multidisciplinary labour ward rounds
- To grow in clinical independence in all aspects of obstetric care
- To provide support to the novice trainees and medical students and actively contribute to training and continuity of service
- Undertake theatre sessions in other subspecialties, special interests can be accommodated
- To have excellent team-working skills with the abilities and professional attitude to work well in a multi-professional team.
- The post holder will also contribute to service development. This may involve contributing to Ockenden recommendations, QIPs, audit projects, guideline updates or teaching and training.
- To deliver clinical and quality targets agreed both nationally and locally with clinical teams and commissioners.
Academic duties will include:
- To work on agreed research projects within the department and meet agreed academic targets.
- To collaborate with academic partners and write up and submit research grant applications.
- To disseminate research findings by presenting at local, national and international conferences.
- To write up research findings and submit to peer reviewed journals.
- If undertaking an MD, meet the academic targets as set by the academic supervisors.

Both hospitals provide a wide range of acute hospital services including accident & emergency, outpatients, diagnostics, inpatient medical care and critical care.
We also provide services such as consultant-led outreach clinics at the Wrekin Community Clinic, Telford, the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Gobowen and the Bridgnorth, Ludlow and Whitchurch Community Hospitals.
