Lactation Consultant (Tongue Tie Practitioner)

Job summary

The Registrant will provide specialist knowledge and skills in relation to complex lactation and neonatal nutrition issues. They will also manage the referral, assessment and revision of ankyloglossia (division of lingual frenulum) in accordance with local guideline and formulate management plans on an individual basis. The post holder will be responsible for maintaining their professional registration and in addition as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant, will have undertaken the Advanced Skills in Tongue Tie (Ankyloglossia) Management course at level 7.

The post holder will have the responsibility for policy and service development through the on-going collation of data and have a strong evidence base on which to inform practice, policy and service changes.

Main duties of the job

Download referrals and liaise with families to arrange clinic lists and meet service need.

Assess feeding, tongue function and perform frenulotomies when required, ensuring parent education and informed consent.

Document clinical assessment, treatment and follow up on electronic patient notes.

Adjust feeding plans and arrange follow up as necessary.

Monthly data collection and auditing to monitor and improve practices.

Support the Baby Friendly Initiative and infant feeding support and advice.

Support the maternity, neonatal and paediatric medical staff in communicating and facilitating lactation for parents.

Liaise with the maternity and infant feeding team to ensure service continuity and consistency.

Attend maternity unit meetings and participate in appropriate in-service training sessions as well as maintain mandatory training compliance.
