Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for a Newborn Hearing Screener to join the Midwifery Screening Department at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

The purpose of the post is to deliver, under the guidance of the Local Hearing Screening Programme Manager, the hearing screening programme for babies born in Telford and Wrekin and Shropshire County. This family friendly service is delivered within the Telford Women's and Children's Centre, the Wrekin Midwife Led Unit and a satellite clinic in Shrewsbury.

Main duties of the job

  • To work as a member of a team, that screens the hearing of newborn babies, under the supervision of the Local Screening Manager.
  • To provide a 365 day Hearing Screening Service to ensure maximum coverage of births, to include weekends and bank holiday work.
  • The post involves the direct handling of newborn babies and communication with parents and healthcare professionals.
  • The role includes gathering and accurately recording clinical and test data on an electronic database relevant to the screening process.
  • To support the local manager with the quality assurance of this programme.

The post involves working as a member of the screening team undertaking the hearing screening of newborn babies as part of the National Newborn Hearing Screening Programme. (NHSP).

Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum GCSE standard equivalent or above.
  • Must be willing to complete the Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners and complete this within 12 months of starting the course.
  • Experience of working with mothers and babies

Desirable

  • Have NVQ level 3 experience. OSCE/ECA training certificate Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners.

  • The post holder is expected to maintain sensitivity at all times to the emotional need of the family in particular when dealing with potentially distressing information regarding the result of the screening
