Children's Services at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust (SaTH) offers a great opportunity to join our Play team.

Our play team work with children up to the age of 17 years old, supporting them through their hospital journey. The successful candidates will work with Children and Young people who are in Hospital with short and long term medical conditions. Their role focuses on; normalising play, distraction therapy, preparing children for investigations and treatment and supporting the emotional aspect of their admission.

We have 2 x permanent positions and 1 x temporary 12 month position to cover maternity leave.

We are looking for enthusiastic, driven and inspired individuals to join our Play Team, with excellent communication, organisational and observational skills.

Applicants must have a Level 3 Childcare Qualification.

Main duties of the job

The Hospital Play Assistant is a person with expert knowledge and experience of Play with the well child and with the sick child/young person. The Hospital Play Assistant will work within the Play Service and Departmental team but will also work independently using their initiative, organisation, leadership and time management.

The Hospital Play Assistant will provide developmental, therapeutic and specialised play techniques for all ages and diversities in an effort to fulfil emotional, social and developmental needs and help alleviate emotional trauma within families.

They will help bridge the gap between hospital and home, creating a positive environment and a positive patient journey. They will highlight the importance of play in assisting recovery and aiding development to all health professionals and students.

The Hospital Play Assistant will have the ability to cope with an unpredictable workload in, what can be, a stressful environment.

About us

The successful candidate will be apart of our team of over 120 staff memberswho providecare for acutely ill children and provide advanced care to children requiring a range of interventions and treatment. They will work within the Children's Ward, Oncology Unit and Children Assessment Unitat The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford, where we provide care for a variety of specialities including General Medicine, General Surgery, Oncology, Gastroenterology,Orthopaedic Respiratory and more.
