Job responsibilities

The Department

Radiotherapy services are on site and currently a new Lingen Davies has opened at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

We are entering an exciting period here at SaTH. It will make SaTH a better place to work, in turn making it a better place to receive care.

Over the last two years we have been building the foundations of a better future through our work with Virginia Mason and our own transforming care institute (TCI). We have introduced a leadership academy with more opportunities for development so all our leaders support, coach and perform at the highest levels, celebrate the hard work of our staff and recognise the wonderful improvements that are being made each and every day. This is a vital stepping stone to ensure we are equipped for our better future and realising our vision of providing the safest and kindest care for our patients. Leadership is about supporting teams to be the best they can be. As we move forward together it is vital all our teams understand their important role in delivering this brighter future for everyone.

The Position

This is an additional Post and offers the opportunity to build up a new patient base. Whilst split between Head and Neck and Skin Cancer Surgery there is flexibility to proportion the work according to the Candidates preferences.

You will join a team of 5 existing OMFS surgeons who treat adults and children both electively and through emergency pathways. The team provide a wide range of Oral & Maxillofacial surgery, Head and Neck Skin surgery as well as providing a Head and Neck Cancer service dealing with approximately 100 new cases of Head and Neck Cancer per year. This includes microvascular free tissue transfer and reconstruction. The successful candidate will become one of the 3 Head and Neck Cancer surgeons and 4 Skin Cancer surgeons.

The Post is currently remunerated for 10 PAs. (Please see proposed job plan at end).

There are two sets of operating theatres one with direct access from the Day Surgery unit and the other on the same level of inpatient ward. There are 2 dedicated Head and Neck Anaesthetists, Consultants and a supportive Theatre Team with a wealth of experience in Head and Neck care. Critical Care with ITU and HDU is located close to the main theatres and inpatient ward at the Princess Royal Hospital and supports Head and Neck patients where the need indicates.

Job Plan

A formal job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and their Clinical Director and consultant colleagues, on behalf of the Medical Director within 3 months of starting in post. A full-time job plan is based on a 10 PA working week. The job plan will be reviewed annually and is a prospective agreement that sets out the consultant's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It covers all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It will provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external and will include personal objectives, detailing links to wider service improvements and trust strategic priorities.

For a full-time contract, the job plan will be divided on average per week (pro-rata for a part time post) as:

  • 9 Programmed Activities (PAs) of Direct Clinical Care - includes clinical activity, clinically related activity and predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
  • 1 Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) - includes CPD, audit, teaching and research.

The allocation of PAs is reviewed and may be subject to adjustment when a further diary exercise is undertaken or if the service demands a review of the team job plan.
