Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist - General Adult or Forensic - 10 PA Lea Medium Secure Ward, St Bernard Hospital

The person

Applications are invited from candidates with experience of Forensic Psychiatry for the above Consultant Psychiatrist post in West London Forensic Service (WLFS), West London NHS Trust. Although it is preferred that applicants have Higher Training in Forensic Psychiatry, this is not essential if experience in forensic psychiatry can be demonstrated. Applicants must be registered with a licence to practice with the GMC. Inclusion on the Specialist Register or within six months of interview is a requirement.

This post is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with a CCT in Psychiatry with an experience of Forensic Psychiatry.

Main duties of the job

West London Forensic Service provides a comprehensive multi-disciplinary assessment, treatment and rehabilitation service for adult male and female mentally disordered offenders, and those with challenging behaviour and specialist rehabilitation needs.

Since 2018, the service has become part of the North London Partnership of new models of care (NMC) working with four partner Trusts (CNWL, BEH, NELFT and ELFT) which is committed to investing in community services that support discharge from inpatient forensic services and pathways back to the community. The enhanced medium secure women's service is a national service. In December 2018, WLFS was rated outstanding by the CQC.

WLFS is a large service with a current establishment of 23 consultant psychiatrists and over 750 staff of all disciplines. WLFS is commissioned to provide 251 inpatient secure beds and Community Forensic Services to North West London Region. The service is divided into three directorates: Men's Medium Secure; Low & Community Forensic Service; Woman's (Including WEMSS).

WLFS is increasing investment in community service provision and support local services with the expansion of SCFT services and work towards the direction of improving patient flow and facilitating early discharge from inpatient forensic services.

Clinical responsibilities

10 sessions Lea ward

The post holder will have consultant responsibility for 18 medium secure patient (10 PAs) on Lea ward. The post holder will also be responsible for the quality of clinical care on Lea Ward.

The post holder will be responsible for providing a high standard of care in accordance with national policy (CPA, NICE guidelines) and local policy (Clinical Model, Admissions & Transfers Policy).

The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical Leadership to Lea Ward, which includes working in partnership with the Ward Manager, leading the MDT and chairing key clinical and management meetings on the ward.

The post holder will be required to assess patients in other hospitals and prisons, as requested, in order to provide opinions on their care and treatment.

The post holder will work closely with local psychiatric services and other agencies, including the Ministry of Justice in the case of restricted patients, to facilitate the transfer or discharge of suitable patients. The post holder will be expected to participate in the follow-up with any patient sent on trial leave on Lea ward from High secure hospital or other patients who have come from medium secure admission or dependency wards.

Maintaining satisfactory clinical records with adherence to trust requirements in relation to formal record keeping.

Managerial responsibilities

  1. In addition to providing effective clinical leadership to the MDT, the post holder will have a dual responsibility to contribute to service development
  2. The post holder will be expected to provide assurance that clinical care is delivered in accordance with Trust policy and processes through normal governance processes in the team and directorate level
  3. The post holder will be proactively involved in all aspects of clinical governance. These include quality improvement activities that serve the strategic objectives of the Trust, as agreed in the job planning process, through audit and other processes. The expectations are that the post holder will participate in audit activity as required for their revalidation cycle with the GMC.
  4. The post holder will be expected to attend and engage in key governance meetings such as the team and directorate Clinical Improvement Groups.
  5. The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to the management meetings of the West London Forensic Services and MAC (medical advisory committee).
  6. The post holder will be asked to represent the service at Directorate committees as required.
