Department: West London CAMHS Eating Disorder Service

Intensive treatment community pathway

Responsible to: Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist

Accountable to: Head of AHPs CAMHS

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will work within the intensive treatment community pathway. This is an exciting new development within the team to support young people to remain in the community or to provide consistent support on paediatric wards to support discharge. This role will provide outreach into the young person's home and to local wards to provide specialist therapeutic support.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide a comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessment, utilising standardised and non-standardised assessment and interpret a range of complex clinical findings to develop appropriate, treatment plans, intervention and evaluation of the occupational therapy programme that includes risk assessment. Where indicated the post holder will work individually with young people.

The post holder will analyse, grade and adapt individual and group activities to meet the occupational performance, environmental and vocational needs of the young person.

The post holder will be responsive to the needs of the young person, within the local setting and use an appropriate range of communication skills to engage service users in the OT process.

The post holder will work independently and on their own initiative, co-ordinating with the Clinical Nurse Specialist, multidisciplinary team and the Consultant Team Lead as appropriate and recognising when to draw on the resources of other disciplines.

Job responsibilities

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will join the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of clinical assessment and provision of care to young people (0-18) and their families and/or carers within West London CAMHS.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will work within the intensive treatment community pathway. This is an exciting new development within the team to support young people to remain in the community or to provide consistent support on paediatric wards to support discharge. This role will provide outreach into the young persons home and to local wards to provide specialist therapeutic support.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will support the provision of highly specialist Occupational Therapy services to young people and their families and/or carers referred to CAMHS. This will include providing outreach work to patients who may find it hard to attend clinics and in-reach work into Tier 4 Services.

With supervision and support the CAMH Occupational Therapist will provide assessment and intervention, which will include individual and group therapy to patients presenting with complex mental health difficulties.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will provide consultation and advice to CAMHS colleagues of nursing and other disciplines and other agencies as appropriate.

With supervision and support the CAMH Occupational Therapist will undertake complex multi-agency work with external agencies (e.g. education, social services) and with colleagues within West London NHS Trust.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will work within HCPC professional guidelines and according to the Royal College of Occupational Therapy Code of Conduct.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will have responsibility for contributing to the clinical governance agenda of the service, which will include teaching, training, audit, professional development and service development.

The CAMH Occupational Therapist will support the provision of specialist advisory knowledge, training and mentorship to other professionals and will also assist in leading and monitoring the performance and work of the nursing staff; supervising the work of other nursing staff and student nurses.

Key Clinical Tasks:

The post holder will adopt a flexible, holistic approach to working with young people, their families and networks, providing evidence-based clinical interventions to maximise recovery and independence and taking account of changing occupational needs during the course of intervention and potential issues of risk.

With supervision and support the post holder will be part of a duty system.

With supervision and support the post holder will undertake specialist assessments on behalf of the multidisciplinary team, incorporating different models of understanding of the young persons difficulties and reflecting the teams multi-modal approach to intervention.

The post holder will provide a comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessment, utilising standardised and non-standardised assessment and interpret a range of complex clinical findings to develop appropriate, treatment plans, intervention and evaluation of the occupational therapy programme that includes risk assessment. Where indicated the post holder will work individually with young people.

To communicate and discuss information concerning the assessment, formulation and treatment plans of clients in a skilled and sensitive manner, communicating risk issues at all times.

To liaise with other agencies such as education, social care and paediatric departments and work jointly with such agencies when required.

To apply knowledge and skills of cross-cultural therapeutic work effectively and sensitively with clients from a wide range of racial, cultural and religious backgrounds.

To work effectively and sensitively with issues of gender, sexuality, disability, class and age.

To apply a sound knowledge of child protection issues and child development to work with young people and families referred to CAMHS and identify when to refer to other agencies.
