We have a strong nursing leadership team, a dedicated Paediatric Lead Nurse and two dedicated and innovative practice development nurses to guide and support you in conjunction with an allocated mentor.

Within 2 years of joining the Trust you will be offered the following courses:

PILS (Paediatric immediate life support)

TILS (Trauma immediate life support)

Qualification in Specialism for Paediatric Emergency Nursing, which is accredited by the RCN.

Manchester Triage training

These training opportunities and more offer the ideal stepping stone to a junior sister role -we are keen to develop and support nursing growth.

Post registration acute nursing experience is desirable for this role.

Main duties of the job

The Whittington Emergency Department (ED) serves the diverse local community of North London. Our CQC inspection in January 2020 praised the teamwork displayed amongst our staff who support each other to provide good care.

We provide high quality emergency care and maintain an above average performance. We are a dedicated trauma unit as part of the North East London and Essex Trauma Network.

In the Paediatric Emergency Department, you will work a combination of long days (07:30-20:00), night shifts (19:30-08:00), and twilight shifts (10:00-22:30).

Main Duties

  • Assess, plan and implement care for children on arrival to the treatment area and prioritise need for clinical intervention after the appropriate training.
  • Develop an area of clinical interest to improve the care & services offered to children and their families.
  • Maintain effective communication with colleagues and patients and their families, assessing and supporting children and their families with understanding of their illness, health promotion and prevention of future illness.
  • Ensure the safe administration of medicines in accordance with local policy and NMC guidelines, including Patient Group Directions.
  • Provide support for children/young people and their families. Direct them to relevant services if appropriate.
  • Ensure high standards of patient care at all times.
  • Ensure an appropriate, welcoming and safe environment is provided for children and their families. As much as possible, this should be audio-visually separate from adults and in line with National Service Framework recommendations.
  • Develop and keep clinical knowledge and skills updated, including developing and maintaining extended clinical role skills, following appropriate training.
  • Assist in the identification of any child protection issues and make referrals to appropriate multidisciplinary team members including social services.
