Job summary

This is an exciting new post for a Speech & Language Therapy Assistant to join a new Workforce Pilot with our established Health Visiting service in a pioneering initiative aimed at enhancing the communication skills of children under 5 years . As a crucial member of our team, you'll play a pivotal role in contributing to young children's early language development.

You will be working with the Workforce Pilot Speech and Language Therapist in strengthening universal support for families through early intervention. This will include developing the skill set in the Health Visiting service to improve the quality of early identification of need, collaborative work with the Family Health Advisors to create pathways that integrate communication into broader health and developmental support, using a screening and intervention programme and other support for families of children under 5.

Main duties of the job

  • To work alongside the Workforce Pilot Speech & Language Therapist to develop the skill set of the Family Health Advisors (FHA's) to enhance the early identification of needs during 1- and 2-year reviews.
  • To work closely with the Family Health Advisors (FHA) in the Health Visiting team to offer education and training to parents / carers on strategies for supporting their children's speech and language development at home, sharing relevant resources and expertise.
  • Co-facilitate parent / carer sessions with FHA's to promote speech, language and communication development.
  • Maintain open and regular communication with Health Visiting teams to exchange information, share progress updates, and offer feedback on child development.
  • Form professional relationships with children, families and colleagues and communicate with them in a way that respects their individuality, values, culture and religious diversity
  • Support colleagues in gathering evidence and information and in developing resources within the aims of the workforce pilot.
  • To employ excellent communication skills

Bright Start delivers universal services for children under five and their families, running in childrens centres, nurseries, health centres and community settings across Islington.

The post holder will be involved in strengthening universal support for families through early intervention. This will include working with the Speech and Language Therapist to develop the skill set in the Health Visiting service for the Family Health Advisors (FHAs), with the aim of improving the quality of early identification of need, through enhancing 1- and 2-year reviews. The post holder will receive regular supervision from a senior therapist and participate in in-service training and team meetings.
