Job summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic person who enjoys working with young children and families and is interested in their communication. They would work as part of our team as a speech and language therapy assistant. We are a large, friendly early years community Speech and Language Therapy team in Haringey. The post holder will work across different clinics and nurseries in the Borough of Haringey, assisting Speech and Language Therapists in planning and implementing therapy, making resources, and administration tasks including booking clinics.

There will be opportunities to work with children who have a wide range of speech language and communication needs. We are looking for candidates with experience in working with young children who are enthusiastic, highly motivated and well organised and who can show a commitment to supporting children with communication difficulties.

Main duties of the job

Duties will include assisting the therapist in implementing therapy and assessment, supporting the use of augmentative communication with children, carrying out therapy sessions under supervision, modelling sessions to early years practitioners and support staff, keeping accurate case notes and carrying out administrative tasks such as supporting online parent workshops, taking messages, making appointments, scanning and uploading documents and making resources.

  • Relevant Training Equivalent to NVQ Level 3 showing interest in Childcare/development

Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience of working directly with children in different settings (school/home/nursery)
  • Experience of running groups with children
  • Experience of working with children with speech, language and communication difficulties

Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of some aspects and types of speech, language and communication difficulties in children and therapy procedures
  • Knowledge of Child Protection guidelines

Desirable

  • Fluency in a community language.
  • Knowledge of Makaton or BSL

Skills and Abilities

Essential

  • Good spoken and written skills in English, organise and prioritise your own workload
  • Good observation skills and ability to record observations accurately.
  • Ability to be flexible, creative and demonstrate initiative and be part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with regard to individual clients and carers (including empathy, negotiation, observation and interview skills)
