Job summary

The Healthcare Assistant (HCA) works under the supervision of the Lead Nurse for the Surgical Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic assisting the Pre-Operative assessment nurses in meeting the patient's physical and psychological needs and carries out some clerical, administrative and housekeeping duties. A key function of the role is to support the work of the Pre-Operative assessment nurses. The HCA works as an extension of the multi-disciplinary team and will care for the patients by carrying out assigned tasks. .Patients within Whittington Hospital is given the upmost priority. The post holder will be employed to work in the Surgical Pre-Operative Assessment clinic but may be required to work in another clinic or department if required

Main duties of the job

  • Undertake assigned tasks including phlebotomy, performing ECGs, swabbing patients for MRSA, height and weighing patients, undertake clinical observations including temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturations
  • Record patient results on the Pre-operative Assessment Questionnaire ( Green form) or Medway clinical notes.
  • Report any abnormalities with the patient's observations to the nurse in charge of the Surgical Pre-Operative Assessment clinic.
  • Work as part of the Surgical Pre-Operative Assessment clinic team attending regular team meetings and team huddles.
  • Act as an advocate for patients and their family at all time
  • Facilitate patient centered care and provide information and support to families and the patient.

  • Good level of general education NVQ Level 3 or Care Certificate
  • Training and working within a healthcare setting minimally 12 months (Hospital ward or clinic Setting).

  • -Basic computer and ICT skills.
  • -Able to work both under supervision and independently using own initiative.
  • -Ability to prioritise workload
