Summary
Applications are invited for the post of a 10.5 PA Consultant in Gastroenterology and General Medicine at Whittington Health NHS Trust.This substantive post has been developed as part of our response to the national crisis and backlog in endoscopy. As part of this, Whittington Health has been granted permission to expand our endoscopy unit from three endoscopy suites to four. As part of the expansion we are recruiting to a new substantive Consultant post within the Gastroenterology service.
The appointee will join a dynamic team consisting of, Dr Deepak Suri, Dr Voi Shim Wong, Dr Clive Onnie, Dr Dariush Sadigh, Dr Anthony Lerman, Dr Sheena Mankodi, and Associate Specialist Dr Vin Hegde to provide high quality Gastroenterology services to the local population.
The Department is a core service within the Medical Division, treating approximately 4000 new outpatients per year, some 500 specialist inpatients and performs over 8500 endoscopies per year.
The division/department
We are a thriving and expanding department with increasing outpatients and endoscopy referrals. We aim to provide a first class gastroenterology service in North London and to meet the challenge of government targets. We conduct regular audits to ensure our department provides a high quality service.
The Ward
Inpatients are accommodated on a specialist Gastroenterology ward with close collaboration with surgical colleagues on the colorectal surgical ward, and in-reach to the acute medicine wards.
The Endoscopy Unit
A purpose built, three room unit was opened in the Day Treatment Centre in 2007. At present, there are 30 lists running per week with dedicated upper GI and colonoscopy lists. We have had recent approval to expand to a fourth endoscopy room to accommodate the expanding demand for endoscopy and by working closely with neighbouring organisations. We are also a JAG accredited Site.

All endoscopic procedures are documented using the Unisoft database with electronic image capture.

In addition to medical staffing the Gastroenterology team also has three Nurse Endoscopist as well as three Clinical Nurse Specialists.

The Trust is extremely strong in specialties that impinge on Gastroenterology. We work closely as a multi-disciplinary team.

The Weekly Meeting
There is a weekly meeting from 1-2 pm on Tuesdays attended by Consultant Physicians, Surgeons, Radiologists and Histopathologists, at which there is a multidisciplinary discussion of the weeks cases. The meeting is intended both to aid decision making over difficult cases, and as an educational forum. Junior medical staff and medical students also attend. In addition, there is a weekly Upper GI & Colorectal Multidisciplinary meeting for cancer cases on Friday mornings.
Oncology
Oncological support is provided at the Whittington Hospital with a Chemotherapy Unit on site.
The Appointee
You will be an enthusiastic doctor, fully accredited in general medicine and Gastroenterology. We are looking to appoint a consultant colleague who will complement the existing skills/interests of the department. A commitment to providing the best possible care to gastroenterology patients, and to working with colleagues to develop improved systems for their management is essential. Areas to be developed by the appointee include hepatology. Furthermore expertise and experience in teaching and re-engineering of outpatient clinics would also be an advantage. A proven ability to work effectively with existing colleagues and management is of the utmost importance. ERCP skills are not required for this post. We expect the new appointee to be fully involved in the teaching commitment, audit activities and management aspects of the department.
Duties of the post
The timetable will be made up of 10.5 programmed activities. There is no General Internal Medicine (GIM) on call or acute medicine commitment. A sample timetable is below. (See attached Job Description).
The appointee will be provided with an administrative space, Information Management and Technology facilities and appropriate secretarial support. The timetable below is intended to be indicative of the job plan for this post but may be subject to change and this will be discussed with the successful candidate.
