Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Head and Neck

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Speech and Language Therapist to join our Head and Neck Cancer team in a specialist Band 7 role. This is a 0.5 WTE post within a dynamic, forward thinking team, providing advanced clinical care to patients across the head and neck cancer pathway, including those undergoing surgical and oncological treatment.

Our Head and Neck SLT service is embedded within a well-established multidisciplinary team. We offer a full range of specialist interventions including surgical voice restoration, FEES, VF, and outpatient and inpatient care. The team is actively involved in research, service development, and MDT collaboration.

The successful candidate will have advanced experience of working independently with complex patients, offering assessment, differential diagnosis and management of complex swallowing and communication disorders as a result of head and neck cancer.

You will be expected to take a lead on audit, service development and training and will maintain a good working knowledge of national policies and procedures. Experience of leadership is desirable.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a high standard Speech and Language Therapy service, assessing and advising on patients care & treatment, as an autonomous practitioner working with patients with dysphagia and/or communication difficulties.
  • Independently manage a caseload of patients with varying diagnosis and complex needs relative to your clinical area using evidence- based client centred principles.
  • Support the development of junior staff members through case discussions, supervision and training dependant on experience.
  • Maintain clinical records in line with local / Trust documentation guidelines
  • Work as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to team discussions and influencing decisions about patient care programmes, attending Multi-
  • Disciplinary Meetings, board rounds and family meetings where necessary.
  • Contribute to maintenance and development of the SLT service.
  • Participate in information management to ensure high quality data which is recorded, evaluated & reported in a timely manner.
  • To undertake leadership and line management duties as required for the post.
  • To work within National and Trust policies / guidelines; and HCPC and RCSLT standards and codes of conduct
  • To have an in depth understanding of national and local standards and able to monitor own practice against these.
  • To participate in bank holiday working and work flexible hours to meet the needs of the patients if required.
  • To work across sites of UHCW and Rugby St Cross as required

  • Use expert clinical reasoning skills to interpret & analyse clinical & non-clinical facts to form accurate diagnosis & prognosis on wide range of highly complex conditions to recommend the best course of intervention, evaluate outcomes, reassess & to develop comprehensive discharge plans.
  • To carry out instrumental assessment of dysphagia, depending upon experience and competence.
  • Evaluate patient progress, reassess and alter treatment plans as required
  • Accept clinical responsibility for the caseload and organise this effectively and efficiently. This will include prioritising and allocating patients appropriately for more junior staff.
  • Communicate complex SLT information in an understandable form to staff, patients and carers.
  • Be professionally & legally responsible & accountable for all aspects of your own work including the management of patients in your care.
  • Take a lead on department audit and service development work, translating findings into practice as required.
  • Provide specialist advice, teaching & instruction to relatives, carers & other members of the MDT regarding SLT issues.
  • Plan and support with the clinical supervision of student SLTs on clinical placement.
  • Engage in department and own CPD activities and lead on supporting the learning and development of others, particularly more junior members of the team.
  • Participate in health promotion activities of the department
  • Cover the work of colleagues and deputise for senior colleagues during periods of absence or peak workloads
  • Participate in other duties as required such as maintaining a clean safe environment always ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness hygiene & infection control.
  • To take on designated roles or responsibilities that support the overarching needs of the department.
