Surgery Group comprises General Surgery / Urology and sub specialties of Breast Surgery, Upper and Lower GI, Laparoscopic and Thyroid Surgery, Hepatobiliary, Vascular, Transplant, Endocrine and Colorectal. There is an active postgraduate medical education programme and focused teaching is provided for doctors planning to take the MRCP

Main duties of the job
Duties will include ward work and ward rounds, theatre sessions, outpatient clinics, endoscopy, administrative work e.g. discharge summaries in the absence of Consultant and teaching junior staff. The successful candidate will participate in the general surgery registrar on-call rota, currently at a frequency of 1:18. They will be overseen by the consultant on-call. UHCW is a large trauma centre and the post holder will be involved in working collaboratively with other trauma-related specialties to care for trauma patients including initial assessment, planning and subsequent care. Knowledge and experience in managing trauma patients is essential.
Upon starting the post, the successful candidate will have a nominated Educational Supervisor. It is expected that a preliminary meeting to be arranged by the post holder with the Educational Supervisor to discuss about their learning agreement. The post is ideally suited for doctors who needs support for completion of Certificate of Eligiibility for Specialist Registration (CESR), where there are gaps in their training such as endoscopy training and require guidance with their application.

1.0 Surgery Group
The Department comprises General Surgery / Urology and sub specialties of Breast Surgery, Upper and Lower GI, Laparoscopic and Thyroid Surgery, Hepatobiliary, Vascular, Transplant, Endocrine and Colorectal.
There is an active postgraduate medical education programme and focused teaching is provided for doctors planning to take the MRCS and the FRCS.
The Work of the Department
2.1 Principle Relations of job with other staff
Ward nursing staff, theatre nursing staff, secretarial staff, radiological staff, radioisotope (medical physics staff), photographic, general surgical, junior medical staff and postgraduate medical centre.
3.1 Duties of the post
The post holder is expected to work at Specialist Registrar level in General and Colorectal Surgery.
The average normal working hours (excluding on-call) would be 40 hours per week. Ward work and ward rounds; theatre sessions; outpatient clinics; endoscopy; administrative work e.g. discharge summaries in the absence of Consultant, teaching junior staff.
3.2 Teaching
Official and unofficial nursing staff tutorials and ward rounds, nursing lectures.
3.3 On-call Rota
General Surgical Rota with prospective cover.
3.4 Research
Excellent facilities for clinical as well as laboratory based research, close links with Biological Sciences Department at Warwick University.
3.5 Administrative
Attend by invitation meetings of the Surgical Division and attendance at Audit.
3.6 Other Duties
The junior doctors accept that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant. This is agreed in consultation where practicable with his colleagues, both senior and junior. It has been agreed between the professions and the DSS that while juniors accept that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptional and, in particular, that junior doctors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods on a regular basis.
The post holder will take responsibility for improving and complying with infection control practices.
4.1 Study and Training
4.2 The post is not recognized by the appropriate Royal College of Postgraduate Training.
4.3 The Clinical Sciences Building has a modern integrated post Graduate Centre
4.4 There is an excellent library in the Clinical Sciences Building with many books / journals and the services of a full time librarian.
4.5 The post holder is encouraged to attend courses, subject to adequate cover, to develop their CPD and meet their learning objectives. The courses comprise of day release, half day release, evening course and day/multi day courses, for which study leave is normally granted (subject to terms and conditions of service).
