Job summary
To undertake the role of trainee clinical coder to clinical groups or specialties as appropriate, abstracting from patient case notes and other information sources and assigning suitable codes onto the Trust's patient administration system with supervision and guidance. Undergo and participate in an ongoing supervised training period to acquire sufficient coding knowledge and expertise. Attend training sessions as necessary and work to maintain allocated reference manuals and standards manuals so that they are always up to date with national guidance.

Main duties of the job
- Under supervision and guidance abstract all the necessary information relating to inpatient and day case diagnoses and surgical procedures from both the case notes and the Trust's electronic systems and input this into the patient administration system.
- Undergo and participate in an ongoing supervised training period to acquire sufficient coding knowledge and expertise.
- Attend training sessions where appropriate which may include travelling to other sites in the West Midlands area as necessary.
- Successfully complete internal assessments and those at external training courses.
- Gain a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology via online and face to face training.
- Keep up to date with national and local coding rules and conventions.
- Support the Deputy Head of Clinical Administration, ensuring clear communication and robust implementation of policy, business objectives and agreed targets.
- Participating in presentations to key stakeholders within Performance and Informatics where required
- Develop good working relationships with members of staff at all levels, both within the Trust and external agencies.
- Ensure that security and confidentiality is maintained at all times, adhering to the General Data Protection Regulation and Caldicott recommendations.
