Intravitreal Injector / Medical Retina Nurse Nurse

Job summary

A specialised practitioner in intravitreal injection (IVI). This role will involve development of nurse lead intravitreal injection service who will be working on both sites at UHCW Clinic 9 and Macular Unit, Rugby St Cross.

A highly motivated individual who is keen to provide a fast-track injection and clinic service within the Ophthalmology department at UHCW NHS Trust. You will work within these busy department carrying out intravitreal injections on high volume lists, you will lead the injection team, be responsible for the safety of patients under your care and carry out all necessary pre- operative checks whilst ensuring patients feel comfortable and reassured during this important procedure.

You will offer postoperative advice, advise any necessary medications and with development provide nurse led macular clinics for stable and potentially unstable macular patients.

As required by service, you will have skills in reading OCT and making decisions about macular treatments . You will consent patients and be competent in listing patients for injection procedures. The aim of the service is to become nurse led with minimum support from the medical team; it is expected that you will take a major role in this change.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.

Main duties of the job

As the volume of patients is set to increase and the department changes to improve patient pathways you will be expected to work shift patterns including evenings and weekends.

You will be expected to support the nursing and medical team and display sound leadership skills, by motivating staff and initiating change aimed at improving the patients' experience.

  1. ccountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
  2. Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
  3. A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
  4. Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
  5. Dealing with departmental issues including HR issues such as absence management, Recruitment, E-Rostering, Incident reporting, dealing with complaints and conflict.
  6. Act up in times of absence for Clinical Nurse Specialist - band 7's in the department.

Job responsibilities

  • Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
  • Ability to administer medicines to patients using patient group directives.
  • Paperwork and leaflets in the medical retina clinic are up to date. To make sure that the consultants trolley with the paperwork like consent forms, leaflets, amslers chart are checked at least once a week to make sure adequate supply to the clinicians. Both at UH and Rugby.
  • In liaison with Pharmacy to maintain IVT drug stocks at both University Hospital and Rugby. To attend any pharmacy meetings relating to IVT drugs and proactively deal with any stock issues.
  • To make sure that the laser policies are implemented. To make sure that the paperwork e.g. leaflets, laser consent form, lenses and so on are readily available for the clinicians. To attend meetings in relation to laser.
  • Takes responsibility of smooth running of medical retina clinics under guidance of Consultants across UH and Rugby. This is in liaison with, non- consultants, band 5 nurses, ophthalmic techs, photographers and AHPs. To liaise with the nurse rota manager to make sure that adequate nurse support is available including FFA service to run the clinic.
  • Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
  • Whenever possible to attend Medial retina teaching at UH and QIPS.
  • You will be required to cross cover other services including eye casualty and clinics in times of increased demand. This will give you an opportunity to work and support junior colleagues and educate.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
  • Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
  • Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g. imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
  • Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.
