The post holder will work alongside two WTE other substantive specialist trainees in haematology based at UHCW as part of the West Midlands Deanery Training Rotation.

The post holder will have access to the training opportunities available to the substantive specialist trainees at UHCW.

The postholder will receive training in prescription of chemotherapy and administration of intrathecal chemotherapy, bone marrow aspirates and trephines and some aspects of laboratory haematology.

On-call/out of hours duties will be dependent upon the experience of the successful candidate.

There is scope for less than full time working in this post.

Requirements of the post

Minimum of three years medical work (either continuous or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification.

Desirable to have at least 1-2 years general medical experience, ideally having MRCP(UK) or equivalent, or be working towards MRCP PACES.

Desirable, but not essential, to have experience within Haematology or Oncology.

Applicants should hold a full driving licence or be willing to remain resident in Coventry when on call.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

The post holder will work in one of three roles in rotation:

1. Ward Registrar - daily ward rounds with attending Consultant Haematologist and SHO(s). Responsible for day-to-day care of inpatients. Liaises with other Consultants (particularly those from SWH / GEH) about their inpatients.

2. Clinics / Laboratory - 2 regular clinics per week plus ad hoc exposure to specialist clinics e.g. haemostasis and thrombosis, lymphoma and haemoglobinopathy. Laboratory work pm. Preparation for Haematology MDM.

3. Outliers / Day Unit. Holds duty bleep and takes referrals from hospital and primary care. Supported by Consultant Haematologists.

In these roles the post holder will work under the supervision of the Consultant Haematologists to:

Provide care and review of inpatients in rotation with colleagues.

See patients, in liaison with the consultants, within the clinics.
