Job summary
This post is designed to recruit a full time Cardiologist providing a full range of skills in cardiac electrophysiology and device therapy in response to a growing volume of lab work for arrhythmias (including atrial fibrillation) and device work.
It is planned that the new consultant would undertake both invasive/interventional electrophysiology (standard and complex) and device implantation (including a lab session that would be specifically directed to "hands-on" teaching of SpRs). In addition to the clinical work there is a thriving programme of clinical and basic research in arrhythmia (AF and VT) and heart failure.
University Hospital provides tertiary cardiac services for just under 1 million people in Coventry & Warwickshire. We also provide EP cover for our surrounding area (Worcestershire and Heart of England). We provide very high-quality revascularisation, heart failure, TAVI and arrhythmia services and their success has led to growth which has resulted in the need to increase our consultant body. It is envisaged that the arrhythmia service will closely support our partner hospitals in delivering accessible, high quality treatment to the people of Coventry & Warwickshire and beyond.
Main duties of the job
Each Consultant cardiologist has two weekly general cardiology outpatient clinics. A consultant would be expected to see 8 new or 10 follow up patients (or proportionate mixture of patients) in each clinic. Up to two additional urgent patients may be booked, but not on a routine basis. The new post will involve expanding our EP service and supporting additional outpatient arrhythmia clinics to see patients with a variety of arrhythmia related problems such as those needing cardiac electrophysiology and ablation of both simple and complex arrhythmias; patients may also need permanent cardiac pacemakers, ICDs or Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy (biventricular pacing). Support may also be needed for a nurse led transient loss of consciousness (TLOC) clinic. All clinics have very strong support from dedicated, skilled, technical staff. We plan to commence a new dedicated HCM clinic and the new appointee will be integral in this service. Medical secretary support and an equipped office will be provided.
The successful candidate would be expected to take part in the "Consultant of the Week" rota to cover Acute Cardiology admissions. This would require a daily ward round (including Saturday and Sunday), but no out of hours on call would be necessary. All elective work would be cancelled during this week, which would not occur more frequently than 1 in 13 weeks.
