The post holder will join a team of West Midlands deanery senior and junior specialty trainees and Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners to provide cover on Tier 1 rota. Successful candidate would be expected to contribute to the delivery of the newborn service, participate in undergraduate and post graduate teaching and development of the service for the population of Coventry and Warwickshire.

There is a full shift system in operation which is EWTD compliant. The post holder will form part of this rota working shifts as designated on our neonatal unit and will be accountable for improving and complying with infection control practices. There is a separate on-call rota for consultants and registrars covering the neonatal unit. There are 6 ST1-3 doctors who work a full shift rota, 5 ST 4-8 doctors working full time in neonatology and 2 community ST4-8 who contribute to the on call neonatal rota. The ANNP team also contribute to the junior and middle grade rota. The successful post holder would provide cover in the neonatal department on the Tier 1 rota, support colleagues and attend deliveries as required. Duties will be split between Intensive care, high dependency, special care, transitional care and post-natal ward.

In addition to providing clinical cover, you would also be responsible for maintaining up to date electronic clinical records, updating Badgernet summaries, and communication with parents and colleagues. There is continuous clinical supervision provided by senior Advanced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners and Consultants. Consultants are present on site from 0900 2200 hours on weekdays and 0900 1400 hours on weekends and bank holidays. All consultants are easily approachable out of hours.

Although the post is not formally recognised for training, the candidate will have an educational supervisor and access to local training opportunities as available to other trainees and junior doctors in the department. You will be expected to participate actively in the education programme, clinical governance activities and local projects / multicentric research trials on the unit in addition to developing a personal development programme and engagement with electronic portfolio.

The post will help you gain experience in:

1. Intensive care management of extreme preterms and sick neonates.

2. Ongoing care and management of babies admitted to other areas within the neonatal unit.

3. Management of babies receiving therapeutic hypothermia

4. Various advanced ventilation support including high frequency oscillation, conventional ventilation, inhaled nitric oxide and non-invasive support (CPAP and high flow).

5. Neonatal cranial ultrasounds and Echocardiograms (including training opportunities to gain competence)

6. Attendances in multidisciplinary team meetings with fetal medicine specialists, neonatologists and obstetricians.

7. Neonatal simulation helps improve team working and leadership skills.

9. Projects and Research including national and international multicentre trials

Newborn Services:

The Trust has a large perinatal unit with a delivery rate of around 5500-5800 babies per year. There are approximately 10,000 deliveries per year across Coventry and Warwickshire, for which University Hospital, Coventry, provides most of the level 3 neonatal intensive care.

The purpose-built Neonatal Unit has a capacity of 8 Intensive Care cots, 8 High Dependency cots and 20 Special Care and Transitional care beds. The unit is one of the designated network neonatal intensive care units for the West Midlands Neonatal Operational Delivery Network and provides 3500 Level 1 and 2 and 5500 Level 3 cot days per year. Experienced and well-trained Specialist Neonatal Nurses, 8 ANNPs, 2 trainee ANNPs, Midwives and Nursery Nurses staff the unit. There are approximately 600 babies admitted and 200 ventilated per year.

The unit provides tertiary neonatal care to both in-born and out-born patients and offers conventional and oscillatory modes of ventilation as well as inhaled nitric oxide therapy. Patients requiring ECMO are referred to the Leicester/Birmingham. Neonatal surgical patients are managed jointly with paediatric surgeons in Leicester and Birmingham. There are regular joint paediatric surgical clinics with colleagues from Leicester.

The unit also provides specialist care for high-risk pregnancies in conjunction with consultant obstetric and fetal medicine colleagues. There is a weekly multidisciplinary fetal medicine meeting and a weekly neonatal counselling clinic. Areas of specific clinical expertise include clinical and diagnostic echocardiography with close links with fetal and paediatric cardiology colleagues in Birmingham.

Consultants participate in delivery of the CenTre neonatal transport service for the regional neonatal network.

The unit is supported by breast-feeding advisors and family care nurses, is committed to the baby friendly breast-feeding initiative, and recently re-accredited as UNICEF Baby friendly hospital.

Specific Bereavement support sisters provide Perinatal Bereavement support together with the consultant teams. Multidisciplinary Perinatal mortality review panels are held monthly.
