We are looking for both community and hospital trained registered pharmacy technicians. This role is perfect for an ambitious individual to develop an understanding of the evolving NHS and have the opportunity to learn new skills on the way.

Main duties of the job

1. The post will involve a working rotation to include duties in medicines distribution and stores, the dispensary, aseptic production, ward based services and clinical trials. When working in the dispensary, you will be supplying medications for inpatients and discharge medications for patients going home from hospital.

2. You will work closely with the pharmacy team and multi-disciplinary teams on the wards to provide high quality pharmaceutical care to all patients within the Trust, whether in a dispensary or ward based aspect.

3. Applicants must have excellent IT skills, have good communication and interpersonal skills and work in a positive manner, with other healthcare professionals.

4. Candidates should hold S/NVQ Level III in Pharmacy Services and BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy Services or equivalent and be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. Interpret and dispense for final checking prescriptions written for outpatients and Inpatients including controlled drugs, clinical trials, cytotoxic chemotherapy and total parenteral nutrition. This may include complex calculations and manipulations. To query with the prescriber, or apharmacist, any ambiguous or illegally written prescriptions, and to ensure that the prescription is endorsed with accurate information.

2. Counsel patients on their medication in dispensaries on wards and over the phone ensuring the patient is provided with the appropriate information for them to comply safely with their medication as prescribed, referring them to a pharmacist if necessary.

3. Ensure both inpatients and outpatients receive their medication at the appropriate time through effective supply from dispensaries, stores and the aseptic laboratory. This will include liaising with and providing information to nursing, portering and purchasing staff and through supervising anddirecting the work of ATOs.

4. Participate in medicines management activities including self-medication schemes, drug history taking, dispensing for discharge, re-use of patients own drugs, transcription of discharge medication and technically checking the dispensing of colleagues under the supervision of a pharmacist and working to departmental SOPs. These activities will include working to aframework of medicines management and clinical governance including the RPS hospital pharmacy standards.

5. Enter all dispensing, ward supply, manufacturing information and patient data accurately into the pharmacy management system(s) (computer) in real time for effective stock control and financial reporting.

6. Work flexibly across all of the Pharmacy departments, covering the work of colleagues during peak periods or absence.

7. Participate in appropriate training and development activities including your own personal development and participate in the education and training of colleagues.

8. Participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives.

9. Participate in weekend and Bank Holiday working as may be required.

10. Undertake any other duties as required by the Director of Pharmacy in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.
