Job summary
You are warmly invited to apply for one of our Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) training posts which are due to commence in September 2024. Fully qualified ACCPs may also apply and are welcome to contact us for more information.
ACCPs are highly trained members of the critical care team, empowered to assess and treat critical care patients under the supervision of critical care consultants. The successful candidates will join a supportive team of doctors and nurses and once trained, will contribute to a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week service, caring for patients in a busy and forward-thinking critical care unit.
The two-year training programme will be jointly delivered through University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust (UHCW) and the University of Plymouth. The clinical component will be delivered at UHCW with the rest delivered by distance learning. Attendance in Plymouth is limited to induction and assessments twice per year (February and June).
Applicants who are successful in UHCW recruitment process will provisionally be offered posts. The University of Plymouth have an additional application process and will conduct their own interviews. Candidates who are also successful in both interviews will receive a full job offer.
Applicants will progress from a band 6 post, up to band 7 and then to band 8a on completion of the training program.

Main duties of the job
1. Contribute to a 24 hour per day, 7 day per week critical care service.
2. Support consultants with day to day clinical activity across the critical care units.
3. Support junior medical staff, sharing clinical workload and allowing junior doctors to achieve training and development requirements.
4. Undertake comprehensive clinical assessment of a patient's condition

The Trust employs 6,500 staff and has 1250 inpatient beds across its two sites, University Hospital in Coventry and the Hospital of St. Cross in Rugby. University Hospital is a large teaching hospital and major trauma centre, offering tertiary surgical services to cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, vascular surgery, renal transplant services among others. The Trust provides both elective and emergency care to a population of over 1,000,000 patients.
Critical Care services are based at University Hospital. We have a general critical care unit with twenty-eight funded beds and manages over 1600 admissions per year from medical and surgical specialties. There is a separate Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit with fourteen funded beds.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Undertake comprehensive clinical assessment of a patients condition
2. Request, interpret and respond to laboratory and radiological diagnostic tests as required
3. Undertake advanced airway skills within the scope of practice
4. Initiation and subsequent management of mechanical ventilation, including monitoring blood gases and altering ventilation settings to ensure optimal ventilation
5. Provide accurate and effective clinical handovers
6. Undertake and assist with invasive interventions, such as arterial cannulation and central venous access within the scope of practice
7. Provide professional leadership and support within a multi-professional team
8. Work autonomously in recognised situations
9. Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge across a range of subject areas relevant to the field of critical care
10. Critically analyse, evaluate and synthesise different sources of information for the purpose of assessing and managing the care of a critically ill patient
11. Apply the principles of diagnosis and clinical reasoning that underlie clinical judgement and decision making
12. Apply theory to practice through a clinical decision-making model
13. Apply the principles of therapeutics and safe prescribing
14. Understand the professional accountability and legal frameworks for advanced practice
15. Function at an advanced level of practice as part of the multidisciplinary team as determined by the competency framework
16. Apply the principles of evidence-based practice to the management of the critically ill patient
17. Communicate condition-related information to patients and relatives whilst offering empathy and reassurance
18. Provide specialist advice to a range of health care professionals.
19. Assess and admit deteriorating patients from outside the critical care units.
20. Complete timely and accurate patient records including discharge paperwork.
