Opportunities exist for a Consultant Interventional Radiologist to join our team in Interventional Radiology at the Imaging Department at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.

The Interventional Radiology department is currently staffed by 6 IR Consultants.

There is a weekly all day Anaesthetic service deployed to imaging, supporting not only the ablation service but also patients requiring GA/sedation for diagnostic imaging studies and IR procedures including embolization, complex visceral arterial intervention, peripheral vascular disease etc.

Interventional Neuroradiology work is undertaken in the Trust using a Philips Bi-plane machine within the Cardiology Catheter Suite on the first floor.

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the IR on call rota with 1:7 frequency.

On appointment the job plan will be agreed with the Clinical Lead.

Main duties of the job

All IR consultants are encouraged to run a weekly clinic for their elective patients. When not doing Interventional Radiology procedural work, the post-holder will undertake DCC sessions in clinic, CT, MR and US with commitment to support relevant body system MDTs. Audit, research, management and teaching activity can all be undertaken through SPA sessions.

The department is fully digital, utilising both DR and CR technology for conventional radiography. The hospital has adopted the Insignia PACS system with Soliton RIS. The department performs nearly 400,000 examinations a year.

The Imaging department is committed to the provision of the highest specification imaging technologies and constantly evolving techniques. The department undertakes the full range of diagnostic imaging expected in a modern tertiary hospital across all modalities.

The brand-new Interventional Radiology department was opened formally by the president of the BSIR in September 2021. This is an excellent, modern facility including the following:

  • 7 bedded Interventional Radiology ward for elective day case care and emergency patient care pre & post procedure including recovery following anaesthesia.
  • 15 person staff office area and private office/consultation room
  • 2 Consultant PACS reporting stations (in addition to a further 30 in the main department) and multiple image workstations connected to intervention machines
  • Staff changing facilities
  • 4 theatre spec intervention rooms with full capability for General Anaesthesia as follows:
  • 1 GE Discovery IGS740 Hybrid machine
  • 1 GE IGS 540
  • 2 Siemens Artis Zee MP machines.

Three of the four units deliver cross table CT facility with both the GE machines capable of all the most advanced 3D vascular reconstruction, contrast free angiography image fusion and full supply of supporting software and workstations.
