Job summary

University Hospital is one of the biggest UK hospital complexes, with state of the art medical technology coupled with modern, purpose built facilities for patients- all on a single site.

Our department has four Cardiac Catheter Suites, two of the UHCW labs, and the lab at the BMI, are equipped with the latest GE Innova single plane flat plate technology; Lab 4 is a state of the art Philips Biplane that is used for Neuro Interventional cases and complex EP.

The successful candidate will be required to provide a high quality radiographic service for the purpose of diagnosis or research; to workwithin both local, national regulations and guidelines concerning ionising radiation and health and safety. To liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team within the department; to provide education and training for staff, while encouraging teamwork and valuing each member of the team for their involvement and specialist expertise.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for radiographers who can:

  • Work as part of a multi disciplinary team Are able to perform a full range of radiographic duties to a consistently high standard in all areas of the cardiac catheter suite.
  • To participate in providing a Cardiac X-Ray service for the Cardiac Catheter Labs, and a neuro interventional service; while promoting a high standard of patient care and safe practice.
  • To liaise with other members of staff, and to be responsible for the day-to-day organisation of the cardiac catheter suite in accordance with departmental protocols, providing management guidance during the absence of the Radiographer manager.
  • Participate in an out of hour's service.

Job responsibilities

Our multi-disciplinary team consists of seven Interventional Consultant Cardiologists, Four Electrophysiology Consultants, two Heart Failure Consultants and three Neuro Radiologists. At present there are seven radiographers, eight nurses and each lab is supported by a Cardiac Physiologist (on rotation). University hospital cardiac catheter lab is a tertiary referral centre serving a population of 80,000 we facilitate day case transfers and a primary PCI.

All of our Radiographers are ILS trained and complete training in IV cannulation through Birmingham City University. Some of our radiographers are trained to scrub both for Neuro and Cardiac cases; they actively participate in the Lab list planning and coordination.

The successful applicant will be required to;

  • Participate in normal and out of hours and On Call, working in line with departmental agreements to support full service delivery.
  • Cover the work of colleagues during periods of absence or peak workloads.
  • Assist in the implementation of all departmental information systems and ensure consistently accurate data collection and recording.
  • Ensure the correct use, and care of all equipment and reports defective equipment or potential hazards to the Radiographer manager.
  • Comply with health and safety legislation,promoting high standards and acting immediately on hazards or unsafe practices in conjunction with other staff, as per Trust, Division, Departmental Health & Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures.
  • Actively participate in departmental Quality Assurance programme to ensure that the highly technical equipment operates at maximumquality to minimise down time. To ensure best practice minimising radiation exposures as evaluated by dose reference levels.
  • Ensure that QA is completed on the relevant equipment and after a lab service.
  • Act in an appropriate and responsible way in all matters of Radiation Safety as specified in IRMER 2000 and IRR99 and to abide by the Local Rules.
  • Report any radiation hazard or potential hazard to the Radiation Protection Supervisor or Radiographer Manager, and ifnecessary undertake any further action to ensure the safe operation of the faulty unit in the absence of the Radiographer Manager.
  • To co-ordinate cath lab lists where necessary; in order to facilitate routine and specialist investigations.
  • To supervise all members of the cath lab team in the preparation of those sessions.
  • To use initiative and clinical judgement in the prioritising of workload.
  • To communicate appropriately with patients, relatives and other members of staff.
  • Report to the Superintendent Radiographer any sickness or absence from work of any member of the cath lab team.
  • Safely utilise all resources to the maximum benefit to the service.
  • Assist in the maintenance and rotation of stock being aware of resource implications at all times.
  • Give practical instructions to junior SpRs, medical trainees and students to enable them to follow and understand the examinations performed relevant to training needs.
  • To participate in appropriate departmental training and induction programmes, maintaining and updating own professional CPD.
  • Take an active part in departmental audits.
  • Ensure compliance with Trust, Directorate and Departmental Health & Safety and Risk Management policies and procedures.
  • Take part in the Trust Annual review process.
  • Participate in any training or development activities required.
  • Undertake any other tasks/duties/responsibilities/key result areas as required by the Superintendent Radiographer in accordance with the grade and nature of the post.

  • You will formally teach and assist in the practical training of all student radiographers and new members of the radiography team.
