The successful candidate will be responsible for operationally managing the department. The post holder will oversee and manage the team and all associated activities. This role requires excellent planning skills, whilst embracing the challenge to monitor and respond to challenges, continually exploring potential for improving/developing services and patient experience.

The post holder will work closely with Dispensary and Ward Services Managers and will be supported and mentored by the Operational and Technical Lead for Pharmacy. As a robust service, there will always be opportunities to stretch and develop, the only moderation being the pace you want to set, support from the Senior Leadership Team being implicit.

Main duties of the job

To operationally lead the Pharmacy department on the Rugby St Cross Hospital site, providing service delivery assurance. To manage the team to ensure all policies, procedures and governance standards are met.

To maintain oversight of the in-house St Cross Lloyds Pharmacy performance, monitoring the assurance of quality service delivery.

To work with the UHCW operations team to develop and sustain processes that align to our obligations and standards (local and national), around safe and effective Pharmacy Medicines Management, within the department and our supply chain.

Job responsibilities

The Trust has a dedicated team to support continuous quality improvement (QI) and we are focused on embedding a QI culture within pharmacy, using defined methodology to develop and improve our services. UHCW was selected as one of only 5 Trusts to work in collaboration with Virginia Mason of Seattle, USA. Virginia Mason developed and adopted a management system that has been sustained over the last 15 years. This continuous improvement culture has resulted in them being recognised as one of the safest hospitals in the USA. They have developed the original lean tools and methodology of Toyota Production Systems, and applied it to healthcare to establish a patient centred approach to improvement. Adopting patient centred tools to empower staff and drive changes to Organisational cultures. As a department we have actively encouraged and support our leaders to develop through these programs.

Main responsibilities:

  1. Ensure day to day technical and clinical responsibilities within the pharmacy and on wards are appropriately covered
  2. Ensure operational plans are arranged in advance by the Operational Team Leader and have oversight of potential capacity problems, ensuring they are resolved by relevant teams and in a timely manner
  3. Responsible for assuring all technical and clinical staff undertake and complete training to the required standard. Undertake regular reviews with the Operational Team Leader to obtain performance and compliance reports, initiating action plans where necessary. This includes mandatory training compliance across the team
  4. Review current processes and work with the UHCW operational team Managers to identify process inefficiencies (waste) and redesign services to align
  5. Responsible for the assuring and developing of medicines management/optimisation initiatives to ensure efficient and cost-effective patient services are provided, leading on any significant changes and projects
  6. To attend Quality Improvements in Patient Safety (QIPs) meetings, contributing to improvements and working with the Medicines Safety Officer (MSO) and governance team to promote safety
  7. To support the Operational Team Leader in working with the UHCW pharmacy Education and Training Team to undertake regular reviews of technical team training packs
  8. Work closely with the UHCW Procurement Manager and governance team to ensure medicines shortages are managed and communicated to all relevant staff and arrangements made for alternative stocks to be provided to St Cross
  9. Work with the UHCW governance team and St Cross Clinical Pharmacists to ensure medicines legislation, the Trust Medicines Policy and medicines related local and national guidelines are followed within the St Cross Hospital.
