This is a fantastic opportunity for a Consultant Ophthalmologist who has a special interest in cornea and external eye disease to join our ophthalmology team at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.
The successful candidate will provide and support the further development of first-class ophthalmology services for the Trust, working in collaboration with clinical colleagues in all disciplines to provide an integrated service for all patients. The post will be for 10 programmed activities per week, giving adequate time for SPA duties.
An award winning, optometry led, Shared Care Stable Glaucoma Service has been running for 8 years seeing over 2500 clinic appointments annually. 50% of this service is currently running in the community. Funding for electronic patient records has been acquired with newly launched modules for medical retina, the cataract service and the acute eye clinic, with glaucoma modules to follow in the future. Main duties of the job
Duties and responsibilities include:
- Develop close collaborative links with clinicians working in their specialty and work to develop services provided to patients in these areas to the highest standards including the development of treatment protocols and guidelines.
- Participate in the departmental audit programme as well as participating in multidisciplinary audit relating to their area of clinical interest.
- Participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Participate fully in the education and training and examination of medical students, trainee doctors, paramedical, nursing and other appropriate personnel. The appointee will also share in the teaching of medical undergraduates at University of Warwick.
- Supervise trainees working in the department and assist in their training and appraisal.
- Participate in the Trust Performance and Annual review scheme and be responsible for ensuring that they support the principles of revalidation by the GMC.

Key Areas and Performance
This post requires a special interest in management of corneal and external eye disorders and the postholder will work with 1 other cornea colleague to maintain and assist in the delivery of a comprehensive service in this field and bring new ideas to take the cataract and cornea service forward.
It is also hoped that the post holder will also assist in the delivery of the General Ophthalmic and Acute Ophthalmology service and take up an additional lead position in the department upon discussion with Clinical Service Lead.
Support Services
Much of our routine cataract outpatient work is performed by the optometry department. Senior optometrists also support the Eye Casualty, vitreo-retinal, glaucoma, paediatric and medical retina services. Specialist nurses also support the glaucoma service, the medical retina service and oculoplastics.
Biometry services, visual field services and routine ophthalmic imaging are provided by the orthoptic department. We also have a medical retina photography team providing specialist imaging support, backed up by the Trust IT for imagine networking Ophthalmology Service Staff.
Ophthalmology Department
The Eye Unit at University Hospital in Coventry is a purpose-built ophthalmic unit within the hospital, which provides integrated ophthalmology services for the whole of Coventry & Warwickshire.
There is a dedicated ophthalmic day unit which can accommodate up to 15 patients at any one time. Paediatric ophthalmic cases are also accommodated on one of the three age dependent paediatric wards.
The two dedicated ophthalmic theatres have ceiling mounted Leica microscopes, with video camera attachments. There are two Alcon Infinity phaco and one centurion phaco machine (with advanced settings particular relevant to glaucoma cases) and one theatre is equipped for vitreo-retinal surgery, with Alcon Constellation phaco/vitrector and indirect argon and diode laser. There is also an indirect video camera for teaching purposes. All theatre lists are supported by an ophthalmic trained anaesthetist.
The department of ophthalmology also provides ophthalmic services at Rugby St Cross in the general outpatient area and a dedicated macular unit. Day case theatre facilities are also available at the hospital for adult cataract surgery with similar UH specifications, with plans to expand ophthalmic theatre services there in the near future.
All offices and clinic areas have access to the Trust network and Intranet, with most rooms hosting floating licenses to view eye images stored on the network (Visupac and Spectralis).
