Job summary
We are looking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Cardiac Surgery for a 6 month post.
Successful candidates will join a dynamic team of Cardiac and Thoracic consultants, providing both planned and unplanned care in a busy major trauma centre. The post holder will take an active role in the delivery of care across the UHCW footprint, including outpatients, internal and external MDTs.
Cardiothoracic Surgery sits within the Trauma and Neuro Services Group; that includes Trauma & Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, Major Trauma Services, and Neuro Sciences. These services are provided across University Hospital and the Hospital of St Cross (Rugby) as well as local community-based services
The Cardiac / Thoracic department is supported by three SpR's (West Midlands Rotation), five trust grades, two Surgical Care Practitioners, one CST and five Perioperative Surgical Practitioners. In addition to providing Cardiac surgery the major thrust is in provision of Thoracic surgery for the region. The unit has grown significantly with appointment of a Thoracic Surgeon practising predominantly VATS. In addition of routine thoracic procedures the unit is becoming a centre for tracheal surgery. UHCW is the regional Oncology and Radiotherapy centre.

Main duties of the job
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide acute and elective adult cardiac surgical services to patients in Coventry, Warwickshire and the wider West Midlands.
- Provide consultation service and advisory service to clinical colleagues in cardiology and other specialities within the Trust, including neighbouring Trust's and Cardiologist's.
- Participate in the teaching and supervision of trainees in cardiothoracic surgery, perioperative specialist practitioners, surgical care practitioners, clinical fellows and medical students.
- Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialities and participate in regular clinical meetings and other postgraduate activities.
- Demonstrate a commitment to and participation in clinical governance, risk management and clinical audit. Adopting appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice . The post holder will participate in the risk management of cardiac surgical patients and in the delivery of effective clinical governance.
- Ensure own practice is up to date; this include taking responsibility for own clinical professional development and participating in the Trust's performance and annual review system.
- Take responsibility for the compliance with national access targets, including 18 week referral to treatment, 4 hour emergency waits and participate in the delivery of improvement of quality of care agenda and accounts in line with the Darzi report.
