Job summary

UHCW is working in Partnership with the Virginia Mason Institute aiming to transform healthcare focusing on value for patients. The Kaizen Promotion Office are the team that leads the implementation of this management system at UHCW and following promotion of the previous post holder there is a substantive vacancy for a KPO Deputy Lead within the team.

The Deputy KPO Lead will have a pivotal role in the KPO, using expertise and technical skills in VMPS to support transformation and improvement events. Uses teaching skills to facilitate the knowledge acquisition of VMPS methods and tools for staff throughout the organisation. Coaching leaders in methods for improvement and daily management. The Deputy will also manage a team which includes specialists and facilitators.

Working within the KPO, the Deputy KPO Lead will be instrumental in developing standard work for the organisation across clinical and non-clinical areas within the organisation. This includes facilitating accessto support, resources and dealing with expectations relating to improvement. The role will encourage and facilitate engagement in service improvement and new ways of working across all disciplines within the organisation.

Main duties of the job

This role will have expertise and technical skills in VMPS (Virginia Mason Production System) and UHCWi. The role will manage a team of specialist s and facilitators whilst also educating and coaching senior leaders across the Trust as part of the cultural shift, further embedding UHCWi as the way we run and improve our hospitals.

  • Lead and facilitate the development of education programmes for staff Trust wide relating to the tools and methods from the Virginia Mason Production System
  • Lead education and workshops to engage leaders/managers in service improvement and daily management to enhance effectiveness in their role
  • Act as a role model, demonstrating the Trust values, whilst being visible, providing leadership, guidance and support for all nursing staff, healthcare support workers and assist with their learning
  • Provide ongoing coaching and support for implementation of incremental improvements to teams and services to ensure stability and compliance
  • Promote career progression amongst their team members and actively seek ways to enhance development opportunities
  • Providing feedback and communicate areas of concern to teams or services
  • Empower staff to actively participate in service improvement

  • Identify transformation and improvement projects that will contribute to the delivery of the Trusts strategic objectives and work identified within the KPO kaizen plan
  • Lead and facilitate the planning, implementation, management and successful delivery of transformation including complex improvement work streams working to challenging timescales and within the standard work for improvement programmes
  • Empower and support clinical staff and non-clinical staff to take part in service transformation andimprovement
  • Provide support following improvement events to promote and continue delivery of service transformation
  • Support the Associate Director of Improvement to plan, manage, implement and maintain service transformation programme, which are aligned to the Trust strategy, liaising with the CPO to build a specific plan for improvement programmes as part of the kaizen plan for the KPO team.
  • Develop and lead workshop events, structured planned education programmes and master classes for all staff.
  • Identify and implement innovative methods for education to maximise learning by a wide range of staff
  • Work alongside clinical and non-clinical teams to identify improvement programmes which can be measured
  • Making informed judgements can articulate to others as to the most effective improvement tools and methods to apply in order to maximise the outcomes
  • Provide coaching to other staff Trust wide to enable them to choose the most appropriate tools intheir role as workshop/team leader in improvement events
